Present Status of Fisheries Resources in Some Selected Area of Bera Thana, Pabna District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field survey was conducted in some selected areas of Bera Thana, Pabna District to know the present status of fisheries resources during 2007. Primary data were collected through field survey interview and secondary data were obtained from books, reports, journals, bulletins, thesis and organizations. The total area of the waterbodies was 2316.35 ha of which 176.04 ha ponds, 1947.18 ha rivers, 71.09 ha Beels, 94.98 ha Khals and 27.06 ha Boropits. In regard to total production, the highest yield was obtained from ponds (652.23 MT) followed by rivers (174.90 MT), Boropits (50.80 MT), Khals (32.00 MT), Beels (17.95 MT) and only 2.20 MT production was reported from rice-cum fish culture. Among the ponds, 62.00% were cultured, 28.68% were cultivable and 9.31% were derelict. Fingerlings were collected from natural source (325 kg) and from the hatchery (560 kg). Fish were cultured only in the ponds and only harvested from rivers, Beels, Khals and Boropits without any stocking or management. A total of 55 species were reported from capture fishery of which Indian major and minor carps, catfish, snakeheads and spiny eels were dominant. Among the cultivated species, Indian major carps and exotic carps were mainly stocked while tilapia and silver barb were also stocked in most of the cultured ponds. A few fishers released magur, shing and koi in their ponds. Information on present status of fisheries resources of the surveyed area will be useful for identifying the problems and remedial measures for its improvement.

Objectives:

1. To know the area of the different waterbodies and fish production from those habitats in the Thana; 2. To categorize the no. of ponds under different management system; 3. To investigate the species combination practiced by the farmers in pond fish culture; and 4. To list the species harvested from capture fishery in Bera Thana, Pabna district.

Methodology:

Bera Thana is a leading fish producing zone in Pabna District located in between 24º05" to 24º39" north latitude and 88º51" to 89º21" east longitude. The study area was covered seven Unions which were Jatsakhini, Puranbharanga, Natunbharanga, Masumdia, Ruppur, Koitola and Nakalia. Primary data were collected by interviewing the farmers. For this purpose, a questionnaire was prepared to cover all the issues regarding household resources of the farmers and management practices followed for the utilization of the waterbodies. Due to limitation of time and resources, only 10 farmers were randomly selected from each Union, i.e., a total of 70 farmers were interviewed over the study period. Secondary data were collected from the Office of the Upazilla Fisheries Officer, Bera Thana, Pabna District.
