Preservative Treatment of Two Bamboo Species by Steaming and Quenching and Pressure Impregnation Methods

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Preservative treatment of two bamboo species namely, Arundinaria falconeri and sinobambusa tootsik was carried out with CCA (copper-chrome-arsenic) preservative by pressure impregnation, and steaming and quenching methods and determined how preservative penetration would vary with the two different treatment methods. It was found that the pressure impregnation method of treatment was efficient in comparison with steaming and quenching method.

Objectives:

To study the effect of preservative treatment of two bamboo species by the two treatment methods and how the preservative solution penetrates into the cell structure.

Methodology:

Condition and sizes : Two bamboo species A. falconeri and S. tootsik were collected from the Royal Botanical Garden, kew, England. The specimens of 50 mm length were cut from green A. falconeri for steaming and quenching, and were sealed at both the ends with epoxy resin to prevent end penetration with preservatives. For the pressure treatment, the specimens possessing two nodes were dried in a room at 18⁰ C for 4 weeks. After drying the average moisture content of S. tootsik was 18.4% and that of A. falconeri was 13.9%. One end of the specimen was sealed with epoxy resin to observe penetration from only one end. Two types of samples were used with each of the species for the treatment. These are the scrached and normal samples in green and airdry conditions. Twelve scrached were made in 50 mm green samples and 24 scrached were made between two nodes of the airdry samples. Scrached were made vertically to the culm axis.

Pressure impregnation treatment : Two airdry samples with two nodes sealing one-end with epoxy resin were used. Both scrached and normal bamboo samples were taken from both the species. One scrached and one normal samples of A. falconeri without any end sealed were used in the same experiment to compare the absorption, uptake, retention and penetration of preservative chemicals. The treatment was carried out with 2% CCA (copper-chrome-arsenic compound) type C solution in a small treating cylinder. CCA-type C solution was prepared from 35% copper sulphate, 45% sodium dichromate and 20% arsenic pentoxide. Before treatment each samples was weighed individually. The round bamboo samples were then placed in the treating cylinder. According to British Standard bamboo culms are difficult to treat, so the following treatment schedule appropriate for difficult hardwood was used: Intitial vacuum – 45.7 cm Hg for 20 minutes, Pressure – 12.7 kg/cm² for 180 minutes, Final vacuum – 45.7 cm Hg for 5 minutes. The uptake and retention of the treated samples were measured following British Standard.

Steaming and quenching treatment : The green scrached and normal bamboo samples of A. falconeri were weighed individually and steamed in a steam sterilizer for 1 hour at 115⁰C. The original moisture was 161.8%. After steaming all the samples were weighed very quickly and the immersed in 20% copper sulphate solution for 3 days. At the end of this period, half of the samples were kept aside by wrapping with a plastic cover for 25 days diffusion period. The other half of the samples already treated with 20% copper sulphate solution was subsequently treated in a mixture of 20% chrome-arsenic solution for another 3 days. At the end of the soaking period, the second half were wrapped carefully with a plastic cover to protect evaporation and were stored in a cup-board for another 22 days diffusion period. Then all the samples were taken out and dried. The penetration, uptake and retention was measured.

Achievement/Findings:

i) Pressure treated samples gave the highest absorption than the steaming and quenching.

ii) Parenchyma cells being damaged in airdry bamboo help penetration of preservative solution.

iii) Steaming and quenching treatment of green bamboo samples gave good preservative distribution and uptake.

iv) In steaming and quenching method, green scrached and normal bamboo samples treated only with copper sulphate solution gave a better preservative penetration than samples treated with the arsenic and chrome mixture solutions as a second dipping solution.
