Cone Penetration Resistance of BRRI Rice Bed Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this study the in-situ cone penetration resistance of BRRI west byed rice bed soil was determined by a proving ring cone penetrometer to develop a mathematical relationship for cone penetration resistance in terms of density and moisture content for the soil type and find optimum moisture content for minimum tillage. The physical properties of soil such as bulk density, dry density, moisture content, texture, soil consistency limit analysis etc. and cone penetration resistance were determined at 10, 15 and 20 cm depths. The bulk densities, dry densities, moisture content of soil were ranges from 1.28 to 1.78 gm/cc, 1.05 to 1.50 gm/cc and 14.82 to 25.84% respectively. The plastic and liquid limits for the experimental soil were 20.1 and 33.25%. The Cone penetration resistance of those soils was found varied from 147.05 to 5605 kN/m². For rice bed (clay loam) soil, the minimum cone penetration resistance was found 147.05 kN/m² at 22.1% moisture content. A mathematical model for cone penetration resistance as a function of moisture content and dry density was developed for clay loam soil. The measured cone penetration resistance as an index of a wide range of soil physical and mechanical properties can be used in vehicle mobility and agricultural soil mechanics.

Objectives:

To develop a mathematical relationship for cone penetration resistance in terms of density, moisture content for the particular soil and find optimum moisture content for minimum tillage

Methodology:

Calibration of the proving ring cone penetrometer: The objective of this calibration is to know the relationship between the load applied on the penetrometer and the deflection of the indicator. The dial gauge was used to measure the deflection of the beam against the load applied on the penetrometer. The dial gauge was initially set a zero. The load was applied from 0 to 16 kg in 2 kg intervals. A regression line of deflection was established.

Cone penetration resistance: Cone penetration resistance may be defined by the following equation,

where, q_c = cone penetration resistance, kN/m²

F_c =cone resistance force, kN

A_p = Projected area of cone base, m²

Cone penetration tests were performed in BRRI soil at different moisture contents and dry densities. The experiment was performed under controlled laboratory condition.

Achievement/Findings:

The effect of cone penetration resistance on soil bulk density, dry density and moisture content was investigated for clay loam soil. The conclusions are as follows:

The cone penetration resistance and dry density is negatively co-related with moisture content.
The cone penetration resistance of agricultural soil is increased with the penetration depth.
For rice bed (clay loam) soil, minimum cone penetration resistance was found at 22.1% moisture content.
Cone penetration resistance-dry density-moisture content relationship in 3-D space for a particular soil enables one to make practical use of the cone penetrometer test for soil compaction related studies.
For a given liquid limit, the greater the plasticity index of a soil, the greater is its clay content, toughness and dry strength and the lower is its permeability.

The plastic limit has generally been taken to indicate the upper end of the range of water contents in which the soil is friable and most readily cultivated to produce a seedbed. The liquid and plastic limits can be used in both the agricultural and civil engineering soils for classifying the fine-grained soils and in the design and control tests of earthworks. The addition of liquid and plastic limit values in testing gives a better indication on the mechanical behavior of soil in the field. In tillage, cone resistance measurements are to detect compact layers, predict plow drought, the performance of cultivator tines etc. From the cone penetration resistance data, we can specify the soil depending for prediction the draft force.
