A study was conducted to investigate the existing litter management system in commercial poultry farms of Sreepur Upazilla, Gazipur. The major objectives of this research were to explore the existing litter management system in different poultry farms in the study area. In this study, it was found that on the basis of farming area 52.78%, 27.78%, 11.11%, 8.33% of the investigated farms were small, lower medium, upper medium, and large respectively. The generation of litter depends on farm size, no. of birds, age of birds, feed ratio, bedding materials, weather condition, etc. Among the surveyed farms, 47.20% dispose litter in pit, 44.44% on open place, 5.56% on roadside and the rest 2.78% in other places. Most of the investigated farms used litter as compost (52.78%) while others used as fish feed (30.55%), bio-gas production (2.78%), incineration (5.56%) and other purposes (8.33%). A significant relation was found between farm size and litter generation. On the issue of environmental pollution due to poultry litter, 77.78% respondents’ perception was negative, 13.89% respondents’ positive and 8.33% respondents’ had no clear idea. From the results of this study poultry farms would be benefited both in economically and environmentally.

  • To explore the existing poultry litter management systems.
  • To identify the environmental relation with the poultry  litter management.
  • To suggest for better poultry litter management and its disposal system in some selected poultry farms of Gazipur district.

Study area: The study was conducted in Sreepur upazila under Gazipur zilla during April to May 2011. Two unions namely Sreepur and Maona were selected randomly for this study. Sampling procedure: A large number of poultry farms have been setup on these study area. A total of 36 farms were selected at random for the study purpose. Among these 36 farms, there were 18 farms of layer and 18 of broiler farms. Preparation of interview schedule: In order to collect relevant information, a survey schedule or questionnaire was prepared to collect data. The schedule was carefully designed keeping the objectives of the study in view. The schedule was translated into Bengali to facilitate data collection. Before finalizing the schedule it was pre-tested for judging the suitability of schedule to respondents. Necessary correction, modification and alterations were done accordingly. Collection of data: Data were collected through personal interview during April to May 2011. The interviewer explained the purpose of the study and requested necessary help and co-operation in collecting data from the respondents. In order to minimize the error in response, questions were asked in simple Bangla. After completion of each interview, it was checked to be sure that information had been properly recorded. Area and litter generation of poultry farm: The area of the farms, including number of poultry shed, was measured in square feet (sq.ft.). The total production of litter was measured in kg/batch (35 days) for broiler farms and kg/16 weeks for layer farms. The production of litter depends on the number of production components of the poultry farms such as types of litter uses (rice husk, wood shavings), medicinal wastes, drinking water, feed ratio, addition or mixing of new bedding materials, age of birds and other poultry related wastes. It also depends on the weather condition like temperature, humidity, etc.

On the basis of farming area or size 52.78%, 27.78%, 11.11%, 8.33% of the investigated farms were small, lower medium, upper medium and large respectively. The layer farms generate less amount of litter (655.86 kg day-1) while the broiler farms generate huge amount of litter (855.44 kg day-1). A significant relation was found between the litter generation and farm size. In this study it is found that most of the farms (88.89%) use rice husk as the bedding materials of the litter and rest (11.11%) use wood shavings for the same purposes. About 47.20% farms dispose the litter in pit, 44.44% in open place, 5.56% on road side and rest 2.78% in other places. It is also found that 52.78% farms use litter for composting purpose, 30.55% for fish feed, 2.78% for biogas production, 5.56% for incineration and rest 8.33% use other purposes. From this study it was found that most of the broiler farms collect or change the whole litter after completion of rearing the batch (35 days) and some of change twice for one batch of broiler. On the other hand most of the layer farms collect or change the litters twice within 16 weeks and where as some of farms change thrice within weeks. In this study area out of 36 farms most of the respondents’ answer was negative on the query of environmental pollution due to poultry litters.
