Command Area Development of Shallow Tubewell by Providing Different Conveyance System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of shallow tubewell for different types of conveyance system was investigated for command area development. Hence improved earthen canal, pre cast canal and buried pipe distribution systems were selected at Bheramara upazila in Kustia district. It was observed from the investigation that average water loss through the improved earthen canal, pre cast canal and buried pipe systems were 7 1/s/100m, 3.91/s/100m and 0.351/s/100m respectively. The construction costs of those canals were Tk. 22.50, Tk.195.5 and 397.62 per running meter. The command area of shallow tubewell (14 1/s) under improved earthen canal, pre-cast canal and buried pipe systems were found 3.22 hectares, 4.6 hectares and 9.25 hectares respectively in this area. The minimum water loss was observed from the buried pipe system and minimum cost of construction was found for improved earthen canal. The highest serviceable life and command area was estimated for buried pipe distribution system. Considering the water loss, construction cost, covered area and serviceable life of canals the buried pipe distribution system was superior to others for command area development. Thus command area of shallow tubewell can be increased by providing pre-cast canal and substantially by buried pipe distribution system.

Objectives:

To increase irrigated area, reduce cost of irrigation, and enhance production through appropriate on farm water management practices.
To compare the seepage and percolation loss of water from earthen, pre cast canal and buried pipe system.
To provide information for the improvement of command areas those systems.

Methodology:

The study was conducted on irrigation conveyance system which is located at Bheramara upazila under Kustia district which is about 20 km north from district headquarter. More or less all the areas are dominated by sandy loam soil. The topography of the land is relatively high and flat. The geographical of the experimental area is in 88° 55' N latitude and 89° E longitude. The experimental areas belong to the AEZ 10-11. The data including seepage and percolation loss, cost of construction and command area were collected during January to June 2007. In this study the canal was designed. Improved earthen canal and pre-cast canal were constructed according to design dimensions. Conveyance loss was measured and command area was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

In this study, the percentage of increased land for pre-cast canal and buried pipe system were 43% and 18% respectively. So considering the water loss (0.35 1/ S/100 m) construction cost (397.62 Tk/m) covered area (9.25 hectares) and serviceable life (50 yrs) of the buried pipe distribution system, this system was superior to that of others for command area development. Thus command area of shallow tubewell can be increased by providing pre-cast canal and substantially by buried pipe distribution system.
