Effect of Harvesting Time on Seed Quality of BRRI Dhan29

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Bangladesh rice Research Institute farm during Boro season of 2008-09 to investigate the maturity level of rice seed for quality seed production. BRRI dhan29, a long duration variety was used as a test variety. Seed samples were collected at 22,24,26,28 and 30 day after fifty percent flowering for maturity. Different qualitative characters such as percentage of high density grain, percentage of fresh seed soaked in urea solution, germination percentage and seed vigor index along with yield and yield and yield components were studied. All the studied characters except panicle per unit area and percentage of fresh seed were significantly influenced by harvesting time. These characters such as filled grains panicle, seed yield, percent high density grain, germination percentage and seed vigor index were increased gradually with delaying harvesting time as well as increasing maturity. Harvesting of rice seed at 30 days after flowering produced quality seed along with good yield.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of harvesting time after flowering for producing quality rice seed

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute farm during Boro season of 2008-09 to investigate the effect of harvesting time between heading and maturity stage for producing quality seed of rice. Regarding this, seed samples of all the plots were collected at 22,24,26,28 and 30 days after flowering (DAF). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Forty five days old seedlings of BRRI dhan29 was transplanted with 3 seedlings hill at a spacing of 20×20 cm. The unit plot size was 4×2.5m. Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate were applied @270,130, 120, 70,10 kg ha^-1, respectively (BARC, 2005). All other operations were followed as BRRI recommendation (BRRI, 2008). Roughing was done at maximum tillering, flowering and maturity stage. Yield components such as number of panicle m, no, of spikelet panicle, 1000 grain weight, seed yield were calculated following normal procedure and different qualitative characters such as percentage of high density grain, percentage of fresh seed soaked in urea solution, germination percentage and seed vigor index were studied. High density grain (HDG) was identified using a saline solution having the specific gravity of 1.2. The grains which sinked into the solution were designated as HDG (Yasmeen and Gomosta, 2002). Urea solution was prepared @ 1.5 kg urea in 40 L water and seeds were soaked in that solution (BRRI, 2008). The fully drowned seed was treated as fresh seed (filled grain). One hundred seeds were sown in Petridish and the germinated seeds were counted to find germination (%). The collected data was then analyzed using MSTAT software and means were adjusted through LSD values following Duncans Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

The experiment was set up to find out an appropriate harvest day after 50% flowering for quality seed production of rice. Five harvest days each 2 days interval from 22 to 30 was selected to collect seed samples. The study showed that mature seed i.e. harvesting of rice seed at 30 days after flowering could produce highest number of spikelet panicle, seed yield, high density grain, fresh seed (filled grain) soaked in urea solution, germination and vigorous seedling.
