Feasibility Study of Motor and Engine Driven Open Drum Thresher

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out at four selected villages form Comilla and Chandpur to determine technical and economical feasibility of 4 hp engine driven, 1.0 hp and ½ hp motor driven open drum thresher. The threshing capacity and threshing efficiency of 4 hp engine, 1 hp motor and ½ hp motor driven thresher were found 346.74, 282.46 and 162.44kg/hr and 98.77, 99.17 and 98.61 percent respectively. Labor savings for 1.0 hp motor driven thresher was found highest (53.34 percent) and was lowest for ½ hp motor driven threshers (39.14 percent). Similarly, cost savings for 1.0 hp motor driven thresher was more than 4 hp engine driven and ½ hp motor driven threshers. The threshing cost for 1.0 hp motor driven thresher was lowest (Tk 396.19 per ton), followed by ½ hp motor driven, and 4 hp engine driven thresher. On the basis of lower threshing cost, 1.0 hp motor driven thresher was a better option for the farmers. Benefit cost ratio was highest for 1.0 hp motor driven thresher (1.70) followed by ½ hp motor and 4 hp engine driven thresher. Considering economic suitability of threshing operation 1.0 hp motor driven thresher appeared to be a better option for the farmers.

Objectives:

To determine the technical and economic feasibility of motor and engine driven power threshers
To identify the better threshing technique for rural farmers.

Methodology:

Site selection

A preliminary survey was conducted for site selection. Four village were selected, two form Comilola Sadar Upazila, Comilla, two villages from Kachua Upazila, Chandpur.

Materials

In this study, 4 hp engine driven open drum thresher, 1.0 hp and ½ hp motor driven open drum thresher were used. Motor driven power threshers (1 hp & ½ hp) and 4 hp engine driven BRRI modified open drum threshers were ma were manufactured Comilla Co-operative Karkhana, Ltd, Tachometer, stopwatch, scale, balance, moisture meter etc was used to conduct the study.

Method

In order to minimize error, the experimental data were collected in accordance with the code of the Regional Network for Agricultural Machinery (RNAM). Speed of the threshing drums was measured by a mechanical tachometer. Power transmission system of the entire three power thresher was the same.3,2,1,1 unskilled labourers operated CCK 4 hp engine driven, CCK 1.0 hp motor driven and CCK ½ hp motor driven thresher respectively at the field. Time lost due to blockage of threshing drum caused by over feeding of paddy by unskilled labourers, and any break down was determined using a stopwatch. At the end of the each test, the total grain at the main outlet was weighed by balance. After threshing the un-threshed grain of the paddy panicles wee collected carefully and weighed. After every test run, samples of 50 gm threshed grains were collected from each thresher. From these samples, the breakage of the grains was carefully identified by naked eyes and weighed. In the study, tabular and descriptive techniques were applied with the help of average, percentage etc. to find out meaningful result.

Threshing capacity, cost and loss are an important issue in the selection of thresher. The threshing capacity of 4 hp engine, 1 hp motor and ½ hp motor driven thresher were found 36.74, 282.46 and 162.44 kg/hr and corresponding threshing efficiency 98.77, 99.17 and 98.61 percent respectively. On the basis of lower threshing cost, 1 hp motor driven thresher was a better option for the farmers using the threshers. Benefit cost ratio was highest for 1 hp motor driven thresher (1.7) followed by ½ hp motor and 4 hp engine driven threshers. The threshing loss of the motor and engine driven thresher ranged between 4.32 and 2.34 percent, which was much lower than the traditional threshing (7 percent). Thus considerations economic suitability of threshing operation, 1 hp motor driven thresher might appear to be a better option for the farmers. Irrespective of farmers category the operation of open drum thresher was found useful, and effective from the point of a view of capacity, cost, labour requirement, and threshing performance.
