Design, Installation and Test the Performance of a Stw to Explore the Fresh Groundwater Resources for Increasing Crop Production in Coastal Saline Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A STW was installed in coastal area to assess the potentiality for development of suitable groundwater; to find out the potentiality of irrigated rice based crop production by using newly installed tubewell water; to test the performance and cost-effectiveness of tubewell irrigation; and to monitor the long-term effect of groundwater extraction in coastal saline areas. It was found that a good water bearing aquifer exists at a depth from 155 m to 180 m (510 ft - 590 ft). The EC of the water of this aquifer is 0.37 dS/m which is excellent for irrigation. At present the pump is discharging fresh groundwater. BRRI dhan28, 29 and 47 varieties were grown during Boro season 2010. Therefore, the mono-crop area has been converted into a double or triple-crop area which is a good news for the country. The adjacent farmers have started installing tubewells for irrigation purpose. Growing rice in dry season is a blessing for the coastal area farmers. The yield of BRRI dhan28, 29 and 47 were 4.02 t/ha, 5.30 t/ha and 4.82 t/ha respectively. Therefore, all the varieties performed well in irrigated condition which was supplied from this newly installed STW. The salinity of irrigation water ranged from 0.47 to 0.54 ds/m which was far below the permissible maximum limit (<4 ds/m). The STW can also be used for supplemental irrigation in aman season. Therefore, year round crop production is possible with this irrigation water.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was conducted in Sonagazi area under Feni district. It is a saline area where only one T Aman rice is grown under rainfed condition. As a result it is a mono-crop area. The vast fields are kept fallow during dry season due to lack of suitable irrigation water. Therefore, a test well having 7 cm diameter was designed and installed at BRRI Regional Station Sonagazi in April 2009. The total depth of the well is 180 m (600 ft). The strainer was placed at a depth from 162 m to 180 m (530 ft to 590 ft). So the length of the strainer is 18 m (60 ft).
