Assessment of Farm Reservoir for Crop Production in the Coastal Area at Sonagazi, Feni-2010

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out to assess the use of existing farm reservoir for crop production at coastal area of Sonagazi, Feni. During the Aman (July-November) season, total rainfall was 2676 mm. It was observed that there was no water stress in Aman season due to sufficient rainfall. The grain yield was 3.84 t/ha. From the long-term (1983-2009) average rainfall (2161), it is observed that there is no need of supplemental irrigation for Aman rice cultivation at Sonagazi area. From the analysis of rainfall and FR storage, it was observed that at the end of Aman season (November), 75% (33.25 m³) stored water was available in the FR. It was observed that there is a scope of Rabi crop cultivation by using the conserved FR water. Rainwater harvesting in a reservoir with 25 cm high embankment conserved 22 percent more water than without embankment, which could increase irrigated area in Rabi season. It was observed that rainfed HYV T.Aman – irrigated tomato cropping sequence is more profitable than other cropping sequences. It is also evident that Rabi crop cultivation with pond water is profitable in the coastal saline area.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Considering, a farm reservoir (FR) of 6 m × 6 m size with a depth of 2 m having side slope 1:1 and capacity 34.67 m³ and service area (crop area) 225 m² as catchment area to collect runoff for FR. FR area was 16% of the service area. Three reservoirs were selected for rainfall and runoff collection at BRRI farm, Sonagazi, which were previously constructed. Rainfall and storage were measured by raingauge and staff gauge respectively. Twenty five centimeter height embankment was constructed around the pond to store 9.77 m³ (44.44–34.67 m³) extra rainwater than that of the normal FR capacity. Two inlets were provided in FR to collect runoff. When FR was filled up to the soil surface, then inlets were closed. On the other hand, in Rabi season a survey was conducted for recording the information on use of pond for irrigation and cropping pattern in the locality. Initially data were collected from 37 farmers through personal interview to know the existing pond characteristics, cropping pattern and pond utilization.
