Assessment of Physical Characteristics of Farmers’ Pond and Existing Cropping Pattern in Coastal Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out to renovate existing farm reservoir and cropping pattern for increasing water potentiality and crop productivity. Farmers mostly follow Fallow–Fallow–T.Aman rice cropping pattern and those who have ponds they follow Vegetable–Fallow–T.Aman rice cropping pattern. Farmers grow Aman rice under rainfed condition. They cultivate local rice (Rajashail and Kajalshail) in Aman season with low input use. In Vegetable–Fallow–T.Aman cropping pattern, farmers cultivate chilli, ladisfinger, tomato and vegetables such as red amaranthus, radish and spinach in Rabi season. After T.Aman rice harvest, farmers prepared the land for vegetable cultivation and start planting from November to December and harvest within early April. In Aus season, farmers keep their lands fallow due to high soil salinity. The average size of the ponds was 1235.52 m² with a depth of about 3.04 m. In the dry period water depth remained 1.83-0.76 m. Ponds were used for irrigating Rabi vegetable and domestic purpose. Average irrigated Rabi crop area was 0.15 ha per pond which was negligible and could be increased up to potential level (1 hectare) by maximum utilization of pond water. Average life span of those homestead ponds was about 50 years. Farmers’ ponds still have water potential. Storage capacity of existing ponds could be increased after minor repair, re-excavation and shaping.
