Performance of Some Hybrid Rice in Local Condition of Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rice is the most important crop in Bangladesh because of Bangladesh is rice based country. It is the staple food of this country. Due to a trend of creasing population growth, a food shortage of about 2-3 million tons per year always exists. By 2025, we anticipate a 40% increase in global demand for rice. Therefore, we need to produce more rice per unit area per unit time. Use of hybrid rice varieties may be an appropriate potential source for enhancements of rice production for becoming self-sufficiency in rice production. At BRRI, Gazipur boro 2005-06 seasons, the highest yielding hybrid was TAJ-1. It produced an average yield of 7.366 t/ha, 58.47% higher than that of BRRI dhan28, a commercial variety and 15.18% higher than that of BRRI dhan29, a commercial variety with similar growth duration. TAJ-1 also gave highest plant height, panicle weight, number of spikelet/panicle, spikelet fertility, total biomass and harvest index. Grain yield was positively correlated with harvest index. Hybrid rice gave more yields with proper management but lacking of proper management yield of hybrid rice drastically reduced.

Objectives:

To break the present yield ceiling of semi-dwarf modern varieties.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur during Boro 2005-2006 season. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications seeds were sown in 7^thDecember 2005 and transplanted in the main field at 6^thJanuary 2006. Twenty nine days old seedlings were transplanted with a single seedling per hill at 20x20 cm spacing between rows and 1 5x1 5cm between plants. The experiment were conducted on duration basis short duration variety was compared with BRRI dhan28 as check and long duration variety was compared with BRRI Dhan29 as check. 15 hybrids and two commercial varieties were transplanted. Fertilizers were applied @ 270: 130: 120: 70: 10 kg urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphat per hectare. One fourth nitrogen,2/3 MP and all other recommended fertilizer were applied at final land preparation. Remaining nitrogen was applied in three equal splits as 1st2^nd and 3^rdtop dress of urea at 15 DAT, 35 DAT and at booting time. Intercultural operations and pest control measures were done as when necessary. Data were taken for yield and yield contributing characters. Finally 1 0m²areas was harvested for grain yield excluding border area and adjusted at 14% moisture level.

Achievement/Findings:

In this study the use of further improved rice varieties with a higher yield potentiality than the modern inbred type varieties are needed to minimize the prevailing gap between population growth and food grain productivity. Use of hybrid rice varieties may be an appropriate potential source for enhancements of rice production for becoming self-sufficiency in rice production. The highest yielding hybrid was TAJ-1.
