Assessment of Groundwater Resources and Safe Utilization in Different Geo-hydrological Regions-2010

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur, Rajshahi, Comilla, Bhanga, Khulna, Rangpur, Sonagazi during July 2009 to June 2010. Available water level recorder was used for measuring groundwater fluctuation. Rainfall and evaporation data was collected from nearest meteorological station. During this period maximum lowering of groundwater table was observed in March/April and minimum in September/October. The highest depth was found in Gazipur and the lowest in Sonagazi. The groundwater level at BRRI farm Gazipur was declining year by year and it was not fully recharged after the monsoon. In 2000, the maximum groundwater level was about 15 m from the ground surface, which was more than 27 m in 2010. Therefore, the lowering was about 12 m in 10 years, which was very alarming situation. The lowering of water table was due to increased pumping demand and scarcity of rainfall from November to March.
