Comparison of Fertilizer Recommendation Models for Rice Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur (AEZ 28; Land type- Medium High land) in T. Boro 2002-03 to create and compare a suitable fertilizer recommendation model for low land rice. The study consists with five fertilizer recommendation models viz. T₁= Check (no fertilizer), T₂ = STB dose for HYG (BARC FRG, 1997); T₃ = BRRI model, T₄ = Arkansas University, USA; T₅ = Quantitative soil fertility evaluation for tropical soil (QUEFTS) and T₆ = Site specific nutrient management (SSNM). The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications and BRRI dhan29 was used as test crop. Application of different packages of fertilizer models significantly increased the plant height, tiller and panicle number, straw and grain yield. However, the highest grain yield obtained in QUEFTS model (6.55 t/ha), followed by SSNM (6.11 t/ha) and ARKANSAS University & BRRI model (5.73 t/ha). Among the fertilizer models, the lowest grain yield (5.30 t/ha) was obtained with BARC model.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur (AEZ 28; Land type- Medium High land) in T. Boro 2002-03 with five fertilizer recommendation models viz. T₁ = Check (no fertilizer), T₂ = STB dose for HYG (BARC FRG, 1997); T₃ = BRRI model, T₄ = Arkansas University, USA; T₅ = Quantitative soil fertility evaluation for tropical soil (QUEFTS) and T₆ = Site specific nutrient management (SSNM). The soil of the experimental field was clay loam in texture with pH 5.94, organic carbon 1.43%, total N 0.16%, available P 13.3 ppm, exchangeable K 0.12 meq/100 g soil, available S, 16 ppm and available Zn was 3.98 ppm. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications and BRRI dhan29 was used as test crop. Urea was applied in three splits as 34% at basal, 33% at 25 DAT and rest 33% at 5-7 days before PI stage. At maturity the crop was harvested manually from 5 m² area at 15 cm above ground. However, 16 hills from each plot were harvested at ground level for straw yield data. Grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis.

Achievement/Findings:

Soil test based fertilizer application according to QUEFTS model and SSNM model produce higher yield compared to ARKANSAS University, BRRI model and BARC model.
