Participatory Integrated Plant Nutrient Management for Rice-based Cropping

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One hundred and eighty-eight farmers’ participatory field demonstration was conducted in Aus, Aman and Boro 2002-03 seasons in 22 villages of Sreemangal and Kamalgonj upazila of Molovibazar district and Chunarughat and Madhabpur upuzila of Habiganj dist. In each village 5-10 demonstration plots were established. The demonstration plots were divided into two halves; farmers’ own fertilizer management practices (FP) in one half of the land and with improved nutrient management packages (IP) in another half of the plot. The fertilizer doses in FP and IP plots varied mostly in case of P and K. The yield increased in IP plots was significant over FP. In the Aus season, the application of IP doses increased 14 to 49% yield in different soil grade. In T. Aman season, the application of IP gave yield increase in all soil grades and the yield difference with IP doses between soil grades was not significantly different. In the Boro season, 26 to 56% yield increased was observed in IP treatment compared to FP. Comparing the micro-topography and soil quality determined by indigenous tools may identify the soil fertility grade specific package for neighbor village. It may conclude, farmers’ indigenous knowledge on soil fertility evaluation may be used as capital to prepare village level soil fertility maps and develop site-specific improved nutrient management doses (IP) for different fields.

Objectives:

To develop village level soil fertility mapping and field specific nutrient management packages with intimate participation of local farmers.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in 2003-04 at Habigang and Moulvibazar districts. One hundred and eighty-eight farmers’ participatory field demonstration was conducted in Aus, Aman and Boro seasons in 22 villages of Sreemangal and Kamalgonj upazila of Molovibazar district and Chunarughat and Madhabpur upuzila of Habiganj dist. In each village 5-10 demonstration plots were established. The demonstration plots were chosen on the basis of soil grades so that the soils of different grades can be exposed to the study. The demonstration plots were divided into two halves with strong ridges to ensure no water movement between plots; the respective farmer grew crop with his own fertilizer management practices (FP) in one half of the land and with improved nutrient management packages (IP) in another half of the plot.
