Adaptation and Adoption of Usg Technology for Resource Poor Farmers in the Tidal Submergence Prone Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Bakergonj, Nalchiti Barisal and Jhalokathi districts in 2002-03 to identify appropriate doses, pillet size, time and method of USG application suitable for the tidal submergence prone ecosystem, increase awareness, skill and rate of USG technology to resource poor farmers. Six treatments were applied viz; T₁ = Farmers practice, T₂ = broadcast small size (0.9 g) USG pellet @ 50 kg N/ha in T. Aus and T. Aman and @ 75 kg N/ha in Boro season, T₃ = deep placement of one medium size (1.8 g) USG pellet @ 50 kg N/ha in T. Aus and in T. Aman and one large size (2.7 g ) USG pellet at @ 75 kg N/ha in Boro season, T₄ = deep placement of one large size (2.7 g) USG pellet @ 75 kg N/ha in T. Aus and in T. Aman and @ 100 kg N/ha (2 medium size pellets) in Boro season, T5 = prilled urea based on site specific nutrient management and T6 = prilled urea based on soil analytical result (STB). Irrespective of location and seasons, USG treated plots produced higher grain and straw yield than those of prilled urea treated plots. Recommended N dose as USG for T. Aus and T. Aman is 50 kg/ha and Boro is 75 kg/ha. At all locations the highest N recovery percentage was observed when large size USG was applied @75 kg N/ha. The superior performance of USG in terms of grain yields and N use efficiency over prilled urea indicate that USG may be a good alternative source of N fertilizer for sustainable higher rice production in the submergence prone area.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was conducted at Bakergonj, Nalchiti Barisal and Jhalokathi districts in 2002-03 with six treatments viz. T₁ = Farmers practice, T₂ = broadcast small size (0.9 g) USG pellet @ 50 kg N/ha in T. Aus and T. Aman and @ 75 kg N/ha in Boro season, T₃ = deep placement of one medium size (1.8 g) USG pellet @ 50 kg N/ha in T. Aus and in T. Aman and one large size (2.7 g ) USG pellet at @ 75 kg N/ha in Boro season, T4 = deep placement of one large size (2.7 g) USG pellet @ 75 kg N/ha in T. Aus and in T. Aman and @ 100 kg N/ha (2 medium size pellets) in Boro season, T₅ = prilled urea based on site specific nutrient management and T₆ = prilled urea based on soil analytical result (STB). From Boro 2003 an additional treatment with native N only was included. All other fertilizers were applied at land preparation as per treatment requirement. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 4 replications. Prilled urea was applied in three splits as 34% at basal, 33% at 25 DAT and rest 33% at 5-7 days before PI stage. All other fertilizers were applied at land preparation as per treatment requirement. At maturity the crop was harvested manually from 5 m² area at 15 cm above ground. However, 16 hills from each plot were harvested at ground level for straw yield data. Grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis.

Achievement/Findings:

Urea super granule (USG) can be applied as deep placement at 7-10 DAT as well as broadcast and incorporation at final land preparation in wet land rice culture of tidal submergence prone area. Recommended N dose as USG for T. Aus and T. Aman is 50 kg/ha and Boro is 75 kg/ha.
