Terminal Drought Mitigation by Adopting Transplanting Date in T. Aman Season Under Climate Change Situation-2011

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to observe drought severity at critical stages of rice, to determine the effect of drought for different transplanting dates and to determine the yield for different transplanting dates. Four transplanting dates were followed as 10 July, 17 July, 24 July and 31 July and two rice varieties were used as BR11 (long duration and BRRI dhan33 (short duration). Both short and long duration Aman varieties suffered less drought and showed good yield performance if they are transplanted during 17 to 24 July. In T. Aman 2009, suitable dates of transplanting were 24 July and 31 July for short duration variety (BRRI dhan33) and 17 July and 24 July for long duration variety (BR11). In spite of losing yield due to drought, BR11 yielded higher than BRRI dhan33. More trials are need for final conclusion.

Achievement/Findings:

The annual rainfall amount from 2002 to 2010 was analyzed and it is downward trend. More terminal drought may cause due to this changing climatic situation. In 2010, total annual rainfall was 1019 mm which is considerably less than average annual rainfall of this region (1478 mm). The average weekly rainfall were 83.7 mm (8-14 July), 62.6 mm (15-21 July), 78.9 mm (22-28 July), 52.8 mm (29 July-4 August), 72 mm (5-11 August) and 59 mm (12-18 August).

Drought amount at different growth phases of rice for different dates of transplanting is shown that BRRI dhan33 suffered comparatively less drought than BR11 due to its shorter growth duration. For BRRI dhan33, the highest drought amount was observed for transplanting date 10 July and the lowest for transplanting date 17 July. Also shows that the variety faced drought in vegetative phase for different transplanting dates. But this phase can overcome drought. Again drought in ripening phase was observed for all dates of transplanting.

In case of BR11, the highest and the lowest drought amount were observed for transplanting dates 24 July (110.17 mm) and 10 July (90.71 mm), respectively. Major part of drought was observed in vegetative phase for each transplanting date. Rice transplanted on 24 July did not face drought at reproductive phase. The drought amount was the highest at the reproductive phase for the rice transplanted on 10 July (21 mm). In BR11, drought occurrence was severe in all the treatments during vegetative and ripening phases compare to reproductive phases. Only Treatment T₃ did not suffer from drought during reproductive phase.

BRRI dhan33 that was transplanted on 17 July, yielded higher (4.66 t/ha) than the other treatments yields of that variety. The next highest yield was observed for date of transplanting 24 July (3.92 t/ha). In the other two treatments, yields were comparatively lower than that of 17 July and 24 July transplanting. Though total drought amount were higher for different transplanting dates of BR11 compare to the case of BRRI dhan33, yet yields of BR11 for different transplanting dates were higher.
