Early T. Aman Establishment Through Supplemental Irrigation for Escaping Terminal Drought Under Climate Change Situation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to document the impact of supplemental irrigation at vegetative phase of rice and to assess T. Aman yield loss for drought prone area under climate change situation. The irrigation treatments were supplemental irrigation for timely transplanting and mitigating drought and Rainfed condition.The total amount of evapotranspiration (ET) and Seepage and Percolation (S&P) was considered as water requirement. On the other hand, total amount of rainfall plus irrigation water was taken as water supply against water requirement. Crop was timely transplanted by using supplemental irrigation without waiting for rainfall in treatment T₁_,whereas in treatment T₂, transplanting was delayed by waiting for sufficient rainfall for land preparation. The difference between the transplanting dates by 13 days. In treatment T₁, water requirement (including land preparation) was 671.74 mm during the vegetative phase and 601.79 mm of water was applied including land preparation water with rainfall (351.79 mm) to meet that water requirement. But in treatment T₂, water supply was zero. Only rainfall (391.16 mm) met 664.57 mm of water requirement. One supplemental irrigation (250 mm for land preparation) at vegetative phase, two supplemental irrigations (100 mm) at reproductive phase and three supplemental irrigations (150 mm) at ripening phase were applied to mitigate the water requirement in treatment T₁. On the contrary, treatment T₂ depended only on rainfall amount. Treatment T₁ got advantages of receiving slightly higher amount rainfall at reproductive phase (11.43 mm) with supplemental irrigations than that of T₂ due to 13 days earlier transplanting. T₂suffered from terminal drought due to late transplanting. The yield performances of both treatments showed the impact of terminal drought at the reproductive phase on yield . Some 0.67 t/ha rice was lost in rainfed condition compared to T₂ due to terminal drought and which is about 12 percent of yield of T₁. Both plant height and panicle per square meter were found higher in T₁than that of T₂.The early transplanting of T. Aman rice on 18 July through supplemental irrigation ensured that T. Aman effectively mitigated the terminal drought occurred at reproductive phase and at vegetative phase during T. Aman season 2010.
