Assessment of Farm Reservoir for Crop Production in the Coastal Area at Sonagazi, Feni

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey work has been conducted to assess the use of existing farm reservoir for crop production and to estimate economic benefit of farm reservoir for land productivity improvement. From the long-term (1983-2010) average rainfall (2212 mm), it was observed that there was no need of supplemental irrigation for Aman rice cultivation even though the rainfall was less than average rainfall. From the analysis of rainfall and FR storage, it was observed that at the end of Aman season (November), 65% (28.69 m³) stored water was available in the FR. It is observed that there is a scope to cultivate Rabi crop by using FR water. Rainwater harvesting in a reservoir with 25 cm high embankment conserved more water than without embankment, which could increase irrigated area of Rabi crops in the coastal area. It was observed that Rainfed T. Aman (HYV)-Tomato with irrigation cropping sequence is more profitable than other cropping sequences. It is also evident that Rabi crop cultivation with pond water is profitable in the coastal saline area.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Irrigation water was provided from the FR by hand sprinkler to irrigate the experimental plots by coupling the sprinkler with discharge pipe of a small centrifugal pump. Amount of applied irrigation water was measured by volumetric method. A light irrigation was applied just after transplanting for seedling establishment. Farm reservoir water was used to irrigate in treatment T₁. First irrigation was applied at 14 days after transplant (DAT) in T₁ all plots. For first irrigation, the root depth was considered 0-15 cm during the initial root development stage. In T₁, second and third irrigation were applied after 28 and 42 days after DAT respectively. For second and third irrigation root depth was considered at a depth of 0-30 cm. Additional 10% water was added with irrigation to leach down the soil salinity. Total amount of irrigation water was used 54 mm for treatment T₁. Soil moisture was measured before irrigation to determine the amount of water required for fulfillment of the crop water demand. Electrical conductivities of soil (ECe) and irrigation water (EC_w) were measured before irrigation, which were less than 5.0 dS/m (4.9 dS/m) and 3.4 dS/m (2.79 dS/m) was 75% yield potential according to FAO report.

Achievement/Findings:

About twenty seven percent water of total storage was used for irrigation and about 21% water of total was remained after last irrigation which would irrigate more 78 m² areas. Therefore, it is evident that for early plantation, about 35% more area could be cultivated. The higher yield of tomato (37.26 t/ha) was obtained in irrigated condition and lower yield (28.54 t/ha) was obtained in rainfed condition under experimental plots. From the study, the highest rice yield equivalence yield (REY) was recorded in Rainfed T. Aman (BRRI dhan32)-Irrigated tomato (20.44 t/ha) followed by Rainfed T. Aman (BRRI dhan32) rice–Rainfed tomato (16.35 t/ha) in experimental plots and the lowest REY was found in Rainfed T. Aman rice (BRRI dhan32)–Fallow plots (2.97 t/ha). The variation in yield equivalence was mostly governed by Rabi crop (tomato) irrigation.
