Monitoring of Ground Water Fluctuation and Safe Utilization in Different Geo-hydrological Regions-2011

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to determine the fluctuation of groundwater level over time and its relationships with rainfall at BRRI farm Gazipur, Rajshahi, Comilla, Bhanga, Kushtia, Rangpur and Sonagazi. During the study period maximum lowering of groundwater table was observed in March/April and minimum in September/October. The highest depth was found in Gazipur and lowest in Sonagazi area. The maximum and minimum groundwater table depth from 2000 to 2010 showed that the groundwater level at BRRI farm Gazipur was declining day by day and it was not fully recharged after the monsoon. In 2000 the maximum groundwater level was about 15 m from the ground surface which was more than 27 m in 2010. So the lowering was about 12 m in 10 years which very alarming situation. The lowering was due to increased pumping demand and scanty rainfall from November to March.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur, Rajshahi, Comilla, Bhanga, Kushtia, Rangpur and Sonagazi. Weekly groundwater level was monitored in observation well. Daily Rainfall data was collected.
