Efficacy of Different Insecticides Against Grubs and Adults of Rice Hispa, Dicladispa Armigera (oliver)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tests of 36 commercial products of 14 different groups of insecticides from 1992-95 showed that cypermethrin (4 commercial formulations) effectively controlled rice hispa grub. In field trials against adult hispa six commercial products, one each of dimethoate (Nugor 40EC), MIPC (Sopcin75WP) propoxur (Acekro 20EC), deltamethrin (Decis 2.5EC), fenitrothion (Sumithion 100EC) and dichlorvos (Daman 100EC) were proved effective. Two commercial products from each of alphacypermethrin (Alphaguard 2EC, Bestox 2EC), carbofuran (Fendor 10G, Furasan 5G) and phenthoate (Edthoate 50EC, Phaddy 50EC) caused 84-100% mortalities. Commercial products of monocrotophos (Monocrotophos 40SL, Monataf 40WSC, Nuvacron 40SL), fenvalerate (Fenkil 20EC, Fentox 20EC, Fenfen 20EC) and cypermethrin (Biocyp 10EC, Cythrin IOBC, Cypersun 10EC) produced 80-.100% mortalities. Six commercial products of malathion (Serntox 57EC. Sumady 57EC, Palash 57EC, Malason 57EC, Ficorn 57EC and Malphos 57EC) were also effective causing 80- 100% mortalities.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficacy of different insecticides against grubs and adults of rice hispa

Methodology:

The trials were conducted from 1992-95 at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm. Gazipur. Field as well as greenhouse trial were conducted against grub and adult of rice hispa.

Greenhouse trial against grub: Four commercial products were evaluated against hispa grub durng 1992 Aus season (March-July). Potted BR3 seedlings (35 days old) containing rice hispa grub (2^nd – 3^rd instar) were collected from hispa rearing house of BRRI greenhouse. Each pot contained 10 tillers. A pretreatment count of grub numbers was taken from these 10 tillers. Four different commercial formulations of cyperrnethrin were applied on the putted seedlings containing grubs @ 0.5 l/ha (0.05 l a.i./ha) with a knapsack sprayer. The spray volume was 800 l /ha. A set of untreated pots containing grubs were kept as control. The experiment Was laid out in a completely randomized design with 5 replications. A post treatment count was taken 48 hours after insecticide application and percent mortalities of grubs in the treated pots were calculated by Abbott's formula (Abbott, 1925). The data was analysed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) (Duncan, 1955).

Field trials against adult: Seven trials were conducted in five crop seasons. In 1993 three trials, each in Boro (December-May), Aus (March-July) and T. Aman (July-December) were carried out. In 1994 and 1995 trials were conducted only in Aus season (two in each year). In total of 32 commercial formulations 14 insecticides were evaluated. All the trials were laid out in a completely randomized design in four replications with variety BR 11 in T. Aman and BR3 in Boro and Aus seasons. Unit plot size was 15m² (3m x 5m). Liquid and powder formulations were applied at the recommended rate (formulated) in each plot at mid tillering stage of the crop by a 10-litre capacity knapsack prayer at a spray volume of 800 I/ha. The granular formulations were directly broadcast in the paddy water. Ten to 15 adult hispa beetle/hill were then caged on four randomly selected hills of each plot by means of a 12 cm dia x 60 cm tall mylar cage one hour after insecticide application. Each hill served as a replication. In one plot four hills caged with the same number of adult hispa without insecticide treatment were kept as control. Mortality percentages were corrected by Abbott's formula and analysed by ANOVA and DMRT. The insecticides were considered effective if the mortalities of grubs or adults reached to 80% or more.
