In adopting rat control measures, two periods such as pre-transplanting and transplanting to pre-harvesting periods may be considered. In the transplant aman rice fields, on an average the reductions of activity of Bandicota bengalensis were 76.11, 78.02 and 82.98 through Zinc phosphide bait (2%), Aluminium phosphide tablet (3g) and Storm (0.005%) respectively. Pre-transplanting period offered the well-suited condition for rodent control in rice fields. Among the three types of rodenticides, Storm was more effective compared to Zinc phosphide bait and Aluminium phosphide for controlling B. bengalensis. Considering control measures, no significant difference was observed among the three study areas.

The efficacy of different rodenticides against rats varies due to the individual toxic effect on rat populations as well as the efficiency to apply them. The present study was concerned with control of rats through chemical measures.

The study was conducted from 01 June to 30 December at three areas: B.A.U. Agricultural Farm, Suatiakhali and Chalakandi villages of sadar upazilla of Mymensingh district, Bangladesh. A total area of 285.93 ha of transplant aman rice fields numbering 30 x 8 = 240 were selected for the study during pre transplanting, and transplanting to pre-harvesting periods. The size of the unit areas were different. Among the 240 rice fields, 60 were undertaken as control (untreated fields) to observe the per cent tiller damage and yield reduction due to the attack of Bandicota bengalensis. Three types of commercially available rodenticides (i) acute poison- Zinc phosphide bait (2%) [for one Kg Zinc phosphide bait Wheat =965g., Barley =l0g., Zinc phosphide (a.i.,80%) = 25g; (ii) chronic poison- Storm (0.005%) [chemically Flocoumafen, marketed by the Padma Co. Ltd, Chemicals Division, Bangladesh]; (iii) fumigant- Aluminium phosphide tablet (56%) [commercially known as phostoxin tablet prepared by DEGECH GMBH, Frankfurt, West Germany] were chosen for evaluation. In all the tests, rodent population was estimated using active burrow system counts before and after treatment of the poisons and in case of untreated burrows. Among the 240 experimental fields, 180 were broadly divided into three study units. Each of these units was treated with a different rodenticide and thus the three units were treated separately with three different rodenticides mentioned earlier. Again, each unit was divided into two sub-units considering the crop seasons i.e., pre-transplanting period and transplanting to pre-harvesting periods. Zinc phosphide bait was thus applied in the first study unit (60 fields). Similarly Aluminium phosphide tablet, and Storm were applied in the second and third study unit, respectively. Each study unit was searched intensively for active burrows to apply the rodenticides. The application procedure was as follows:

  • Approximately 5g of Zinc phosphide bait were wrapped in plastic paper and inserted into each active burrow, then the burrows were covered with dirt, tightly sealed and marked.
  • Two waxy blocks of Storm (4g each) were introduced into the active burrow and then all the burrow openings were sealed.
  • Two Aluminium phosphide tablets (3g each) were placed in each active burrow and the burrow openings were closed.

For Zinc phosphide bait and Aluminium phosphide tablet observations were made from the following day at 6: 00 am continuously for three days. If a new active burrow was found in those areas then the rodenticides were again applied in the field. Finally after 5 days total number of active burrow systems were counted. But in case of Storm observations were made in the same way for seven consecutive days to identify the mean active burrow system. If a new active burrow was observed then the rodenticide was again applied. Finally, number of active burrow systems were also observed and recorded up to 15 days.
