Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Location x genotype interaction was significant at 0.05 level for grain yield, growth duration, panicles m-2, filled grains panicle-1, 1000-grain weight, sterility% and plant height. The trials were submerged for 9 and 13 days respectively at Golapganj and Biswanath, Sylhet after 8 and 10 days of transplanting. All advanced lines including standard checks were survived probably because of transparent water. Among the entries IR85260-66-654-Gaz 2 produced the highest yield (4.25 t/ha) at Golapganj. But at Biswanath, IR85260-66-217 Gaz 2 produced the highest yield (4.05 t/ha). BR11-sub1 and Swarna-sub1 produced relatively lower yield (3.26-4.02 t/ha) than those of two IR lines. However, the above mentioned 4 entries gave higher yields than those of two standard checks, BR11 and Swarna (2.93-3.41 t/ha). In general, all the sub1 lines and IR lines required longer growth duration having few variations with standard checks (147-156 days) (Table 16). Sub1 lines had smaller grain size but shorter plant height compared to IR lines. All advanced lines were infected by sheath blight, brown spot and grain spot diseases at different level of scores at Golapgonj. Some genotype showed lodging tendency such as BR11-Sub1 (15%), Swarna-Sub1 (20%), IR85260-66-217-Gaz 2 (4%), IR85260-66-654-Gaz 2 (30%). Other genotypes didn‘t show lodging tendency. All the entries were slightly infested by some insects like, stem borer, leaf folder, grasshopper etc. but did not hamper the grain yield severely. Most farmers preferred BR11-Sub1 and Swarna Sub-1 for higher yield and better grain size. However, some farmers preferred IR85260-66-654 Gaz 2 and IR85260-66-217-Gaz 2 for higher yield although their grain size were relatively larger.

Objectives:

To test the yield potentiality and adaptability of sub1 advanced lines at farmers’ field under different agro- ecological conditions of Bangladesh.
To generate the feedback about the advantages and disadvantages of the lines from extension workers and farmers.

Methodology:

Eight advanced lines: BR11-Sub1, Swarna- Sub1, Sumba Mahsuri- Sub1, IR85260-66-217-Gaz 2, IR85260-66-654-Gaz 2, IR85620-66-769-Gaz 2, IR85620-391-217, IR85260-391-1192 and Swarna and BR11 as checks were tested in Sylhet (Bishonath and Golapgonj) during T. Aman, 2009. The trials were replicated thrice in each location. The unit plot size for each entry was 21.6 m². Seeding time was 15 July, 2009 and transplanting was done during 11-13 August, 2009. Seedling age varied from 25- 30 days among locations under varied circumstances. Seedlings were transplanted at 20 x 15 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 165: 103: 83: 62: 8 kg/ha as Urea : TSP : MP: Gypsum: ZnSO₄. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal and urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 10-15 DAT, 30-35 DAT and PI stage. Other standard management practices were followed as and when necessary. Appropriate measures were taken to control insect pests. Date of seeding, transplanting, flowering, maturity, plant height, lodging tolerance, pest and disease incidence, yield and yield components were recorded. Feedback from farmers and DAE personnel were also recorded. For yield estimation, 10 m² sample area from each plot was harvested at maturity and grain yields were adjusted to 14% moisture content.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on the performance from only one district it was difficult to make conclusive recommendation. However, two IR lines, IR85260-66-654 Gaz 2 and IR85260-66-217 Gaz 2 seemed potential regarding submergence tolerance as with BR11-sub1and Swarna-sub1 and deserve further investigation.
