Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Location x genotype interaction was significant at 0.05 levels for grain yield, growth duration, panicles m^-2, filled grains panicle^-1, plant height, 1000 grain weight and sterility (%). BRRI dhan29 gave consistently higher grain yield (6.93 t ha^-1) followed by advance line BR7011-89-3-7 (6.88 t ha^-1) and BR7230-7-4-2 (6.80 t ha^-1). Although BW328 produced lower yield (6.53 t ha^-1) than BRRI dhan29 (6.93 t ha^-1), it produced about 1 ton more yield than BRRI dhan28 (5.58 t ha^-1). This BW328 was also found short duration (155 days), which matured 13 days earlier than BRRI dhan29 and almost similar with BRRI dhan28. ShB and BLB disease were found at Sherpur, Natore, Cox’s Bazar and Rajshahi. Diseases were not found at Bhanga, Faridpur, Habiganj, Dinajpur and Gaibandha. Infestation of stem borer and rice bug was found at Habiganj, Dinajpur, Gaibandha Rajshahi and Natore Sadar. Insects were not found at Cox’s Bazar and Gazipur. No lodging was found at Habiganj, Dinajpur, Bhanga and Faridpur. Four entries showed lodging tendency only at maturity without hampering yield at different locations, like- BRRI dhan29-SC3-28-16-15 showed lodging tendency at Natore & Rajshahi, BRRI dhan28 (Ck) at Natore Sadar, BR7011-89-3-7 at Sherpur Sadar, Gazipur & Cox’s Bazar and BRRI dhan29-SC3-28-16-9-HR1 (50%) at Paba. Farmers showed mixed reactions about the lines. Growth duration of some lines was very close to BRRI dhan29 but grain yields of those lines were lower than BRRI dhan29. Hence, most farmers still preferred BRRI dhan29 than those of long duration lines close to BRRI dhan29. BW328 was found about 10 days earlier than BRRI dhan29 but about 5 days longer than BRRI dhan28. Some farmers preferred it as medium duration variety with about 1.0 t/ha yield advantage over BRRI dhan28. However, some farmers mention about its slight shattering habit at maturity. Some farmers mentioned about comparable yield of BR7011-89-3-7 having about one week earliness than BRRI dhan29. But its grain size is very large. Hence farmers showed more preference for BRRI dhan29.

Objectives:

To test the yield potential and adaptability of advanced lines at farmers’ field under different agro- ecological conditions of the country.
To generate the feedback about the advantages and disadvantages of the lines from extension workers and farmers.

Methodology:

Seven advanced lines, BR7230-7-4-2, BR7009-81-1-2-1, BW328, BR7011-89-3-7, BRRI dhan29-SC3-28-16-15, BRRI dhan29-SC3-28-16-4-HR2, BRRI dhan29-SC3-28-16-9-HR1 along with BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 as checks were tested in Habigonj, Natore, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Cox's bazar, Faridpur, Kapasia, Gaibandha and Sherpur during Boro, 2010. The trials were replicated thrice in each location. The unit plot size for each entry was 15 m². Seeding time was 22 November, 2009 and transplanting was done during 2 January to 10 January, 2010. Forty days old seedlings were transplanted in different locations under varied circumstances with spacing at 20 x 15 cm. Fertilizers were applied at 100:80:60:10:3 kg N:P₂O₅:K₂O:S:Zn/ha. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal and urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 10-15 DAT, 30-35 DAT and PI stage. Other standard management practices were followed as and when necessary. Appropriate measures were taken to control insect pests. Date of seeding, transplanting, flowering, maturity, plant height, lodging tolerance, pest and disease incidence, yield and yield components were recorded. Feedback from farmers and DAE personnel were also recorded. For yield estimation, 10 m² sample area from each plot was harvested at maturity and grain yields were adjusted to 14% moisture content.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering grain yield, growth duration, grain size, farmers' preferences it was not possible to come in a conclusive recommendation. Hence, those lines need further evaluation making two groups based on growth duration including BRRI dhan28 as check for short duration group and BRRI dhan29 as check for long duration group.
