Improving the Existing Direct Wet-seeded Mixed Rice Cultivation During Aus and Aman, 2009

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

At Nesarabad, growth duration of BRRI dhan27 was 10 days more than local Aus Shurjomoni, Shaita but BRRI dhan27 produced nearly three times higher grain yield than local Aus cultivar, Surjamoni shaita irrespective of crop establishment methods, broadcasting and seeded by drum seeder. The farmers were very much interested to grow BRRI dhan27 for higher yield. There were no yield difference between broadcasting and drum seeding both in Nesarabad and Banaripara. In Aman season, similar grain yield was found in both crop establishment methods. In both locations, BRRI dhan27 was nearly 40 cm taller than local Aus Surjamoni shaita and hence, it was safe for high tide. For tallness, BRRI dhan27 could be observed easily at harvesting and the farmers were impressed. The farmers mentioned weed control in Aus season was easier in drum seeding than broadcasting. BRRI dhan46 was used as photosensitive HYV in Aman season to observe the yield benefit over local Aman Joina. After maximum tillering stage BRRI dhan46 damaged by high tide, high insect attack, disease infestation and could not survive upto reproductive stage both in Nesarabad and Banaripara. On the other hand, Joina survive for its tall plant type. BRRI dhan46 submerged and silts were deposited on leaf during high tide for its shorter plant type. On the other hand, Joina survived for its tall plant type (plant height 210 cm) and was capable of producing higher yield. BRRI dhan27 produced nearly three times more grain yield than local Aus variety Surjomoni shaita and farmers preferred BRRI dhan27.

Objectives:

To increase the productivity of Aus rice as well as Aman through introduction of HYVs and use of drum seeder for improved method of crop establishment, on farm validation program was undertaken at Nasarabad upazila of Pirojpur and Banaripara of Barisal.

Methodology:

BRRI dhan27 and Surjamoni shaita were used as Aus rice along with Joina and BRRI dhan46 as Aman varieties in the trial. The trial was conducted in farmers’ field both at Nesarabad (Pirojpur) and Banaripara (Barisal). In all trials, seeds of Aus and Aman were mixed together and adequate sprouted seeds were seeded on puddled soil by hand broadcasting and by drum seeder. Four varieties were arranged in six different combinations and each combination was considered as a treatment.The land area was 100 Sq.m for each treatment. The treatments were as follows:
T₁= Surjamoni shita + Joina – Broadcasting
T₂ = Surjamoni shita + Joina – Seeded by drum seeder
T₃ = BRRI dhan27 + Joina – Broadcasting
T₄ = BRRI dhan27 + Joina – Seeded by drum seeder
T₅ = BRRI dhan27 + BRRI dhan46 – Broadcasting
T₆ = BRRI dhan27 + BRRI dhan46 – Seeded by drum seeder
The selected fields were ploughed, leveled and puddled with tidal water. Recommended doses of chemical fertilizers except urea for Aus (75: 12: 32: 8: 2 kg N: P: K: S and Zn/ha) were applied at basal. Urea was applied as top dress in three equal splits. After Aus harvest no fertilizers were applied. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done properly as when necessary. Data on plant height, growth duration, yield and yield contributing characters were collected.

Achievement/Findings:

Due to taller plant type of BRRI dhan27, it was easily observed over local variety at maturity stage. Straw yield of BRRI dhan27 was also higher than local variety & produced straw could be used as cooking fuel & covering roof of house. BRRI dhan27 + Joina – Seeded by drum seeder was found as a best combination. BRRI dhan27 was hard to thresh. BRRI dhan 46 could not replace joina in lum system because of its shorter plant type.
