Evaluation of a Hybrid Variety Hb-8 at Reproductive Stage Salinity Under Controlled Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to observe the yield potential of a BRAC hybrid variety HB-8 under salinity stress in controlled Net house condition. Three standard check variety i.e. BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan28 and IR29 were used to compare with a level of stress 8 dS/m. Several yield and its component traits were measured and recorded to compare the yield potential. Results showed that, nine out of twelve phenotypic and yield related traits were significantly varied among the tested entries. HB-8 performed significantly superior over the 3 check variety BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan28 and IR29. Significant yield advantage of HB-8 was attributable due to significantly higher grain number and higher 1000-grain weight, though HB-8 showed significantly more number of days from heading to maturity, therefore experienced more days to salinity stress during reproductive stage. BRRI dhan47 showed better conversion ability of biomass to grain (harvest index) under stress condition but this conversion was statistically similar to HB-8.

Objectives:

To check the yield potential of hybrid variety HB-8 under reproductive stage salinity stress in controlled condition

Methodology:

Sprouted seeds of tested hybrid variety HB-8 along with 3 standard tolerant and susceptible check varieties (BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan28 and IR29) were directly sown on the perforated pots filled with normal BRRI farm soils fertilized with Urea, TSP, MoP and Gypsum @ 2g-1g-1g-0.5g respectively. Before sowing, perforated pots were placed in large round plastic dishes and allow soils moistened 3 days with normal tap water. Each dish contains tested hybrid variety thrice and 3 checks, therefore each dish can accommodated all tested genotypes. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 5 replication. Plants were allowed to grow in tap water with recommended practice for entire vegetative phase, i.e. till to panicle initiation. Salinization was started 67 days of vegetative growth (just before PI) @ 8 dS/m by replacing tap water with saline water (Gregorio et.al. 1997). The volume of water of each bucket was checked daily and maintained by addition of tap water with the level 1 cm above the soil surface. By the progress of the experiment water salinity decreased and soil salinity increased and finally reached an equilibrium condition. The final Electrical Conductivity of water and Soil was measured and recorded directly in the water and Saturation Paste Extract method from soil during harvesting of the crop. Mean EC of water and soil finally reached at harvest at 5.46 and 4.61 dS/m respectively. Grain yield is the major determinants for judging the tolerance and yield potential of rice under salinity at reproductive, while other parameters like yield components, plant height and harvest index also measured and recorded at harvest of the crop. In addition to the above parameters the duration of stress from application of stress to harvest was also recorded. The data were analyzed through CropStat 7.2 software from IRRI.
