Soil and irrigation water salinity measurements throughout the season of all 3 locations from 2 sites identified Kushodanga, Koyra is highly saline, the soil and irrigation water salinity ranged 8.50 to 11.50 dS/m and 4.50 to 8.80 dS/m, respectively; while salinity was slightly less in Beropota, Koyra 4.33-7.30 dS/m and 2.80-3.60 dS/m, respectively; however, at Shyamnagar falls in between of above 2 location, where soil and irrigation water salinity ranged 6.70-8.62 and 5.80-8.90 dS/m. Due to very high salinity at Kushodanga, none of the genotypes perform well at this location. While, Beropota was characterized as less saline soils and lots of water suitable for Boro cultivation, at this location tolerant variety like BRRI dhan47 was found best performing variety, under prevailing soil and water salinity BRRI dhan47 can yielded 70% of its real potentiality. Evaluation of 89 genotypes in Biralakshmi identified 13 breeding lines and 3 varieties suitable for cultivating in the Boro season with medium soil and low-medium water salinity condition. Out of 13 lines, four lines G28 (OM6377), G32 (BR8109-29-4-2-3), G33 (BR8109-29-4-2-2) and G50 (IR83140--B-28-B) showed higher tolerance, good quality grains and  non-shattering improved phenotype compared to the currently available tolerant varieties like BRRI dhan47 and BINA dhan8.

To evaluate the performances of diverse set of salt tolerant rice lines and varieties from indigenous and exotic sources in actual salinity situation with available surface water sources in the Boro season

One hundred and thirteen (113) elite stress tolerant and high yielding rice genotypes from IRRI, India and Bangladesh were tested in two locations at Koyra (Kushodanga and Baropota), Khulna and one location at Shyamnagar (Biralakshmi), Satkhira in the salinity hotspot. At Koyra, Khulna: First seeding was done on the 19th November 2012 but none of the entries (113 entries) were survived. Second seeding on the same seedbed was carried out on the 18th December 2012 and using some management practices (seedbeds were submerged by water) worked well for survival of seedlings. Seedlings were raised on the 2nd attempt was successful but after transplanting all were died due to high salinity. At our 3rd attempt, healthy and aged seedlings (60 days old) from non-saline condition (BRRI, Gazipur) were transplanted in the 1st week of February, 2013. This time irrigation was provided by less saline pond water (4.5 dS/m) and most of the entries were survived and some showing good vegetative growth. However, at Shyamnagar: The seedlings of all tested genotypes (104) were raised on-site in the nearby upland areas where the soil and water salinity was relatively low (ECw: 1.7 dS/m). Eighty nine genotypes were germinated and produced healthy seedlings due to low soil and water salinity. Out of 113 only 89 genotypes were transplanted in to the main fields with recommended practices, 36 hills (12 plant x 3 rows) for each genotypes were transplanted. Soil and water salinity was measured and recorded throughout the growing season of all 3 locations from 2 site. Grain yield, survivability and phenotypic acceptability were measured to evaluate the performances of the genotypes.

Based on the above results of 3 trials in 3 different saline locations of Khulna and Satkhira could be pointed out the following important issues: 1) Above results could help to draw preliminary ideas to cultivate Boro rice without or limited yield sacrifice and also cultivation of Boro rice to what extends of soil and irrigation water salinity with the currently available tolerant varieties/genotypes (upper limits of soil and irrigation water salinity is ECe 8.6 dS/m and ECw 4.5 dS/m respectively). 2) At least 13 genotypes out of 89 is suitable to release as salt tolerant variety and should be available for cultivation of above mentioned soil and irrigation water salinity. 3) Four genotypes G28 (OM6377), G32 (BR8109-29-4-2-3), G33 (BR8109-29-4-2-2) and G50 (IR83140--B-28-B) were selected for seed multiplication and dissemination among the farmers, those showing higher tolerance, good quality grains and improved phenotype compared to the currently available varieties like BRRI dhan47 and BINA dhan8. 4) By observing the trials, farmers of these 3 locations are now confident to cultivate Boro rice with their available resources and tolerant varieties.
