Performance of Modern and Traditional Rice Varieties at Low and Moderate Levels of N

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The upland rice in low rainfall zone suffers from drought. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of BR21 and BR24 in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur during Aus season in 1996. Two modern varieties (BR21 and BR24) and three traditional variety (Dharial, Hashikalmi and Kaishapanja) were tested at two N level (15 and 60 kg/ha). The modern upland rice varieties BR21 and BR24 and the traditional variety Dharial yielded good. The modern variety could not produce any roots below 40 cm soil depth. The nitrogen use efficiency of modern varieties was significantly higher than that of traditional variety. BR21 and BR24 can be grown as a upland under favorable condition. They lack deep rooting ability unlike traditional upland rice varieties.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of BR21 and BR24 compared to traditional upland rice varieties in terms of growth and yielding ability at two different N levels

Methodology:

Seeds of BR21, BR24, Dharial, Hashikalmi and Kaishapanja were sown in lines maintaining 25 cm between two lines. At 10 days after emergence (DAE) seedlings were thinned 20 seedlings/ linear meter. P₂O₅and K₂O were applied @ 40 kg/ha at land preparation. Nitrogen was applied @ 15 and 60 kg/ha in three splits-one at 13 DAE, the 2^nd at 25 DAE and the rest at 30 DAE. The experiment was conducted using split plot design- N in the main plot and varieties in sub plot.

Achievement/Findings:

The crop did not suffer any drought during 1996. The traditional variety Dharial yielded as good as modern upland rice varieties BR21 and BR24. The other two traditional varieties produced significantly lower grain yield than the others. No response of nitrogen was observed in yield and yield components. The higher grain yield of BR21 and BR24 was due higher grain no./m². But in Dharial, this could be due to higher 1000 grain weight. RTR value approached to the peak at 20 DAE. However, there was no significant difference of RTR among the varieties at 15 kg or 60 kg N-rate. In terms of root growth, the traditional varieties penetrate upto 60 cm of soil depth, but modern varieties could not produce any roots below 40 cm soil depth.The nitrogen use efficiency of modern varieties was significantly higher than that of dharial, Kaishapanja and Hashikalmi. BR21 and BR24 produced higher yield than that of traditional upland rice varieties at similar amount of absorbed N.
