Rooting Ability of Some Cultivars and Breeding Lines in T. Aman

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rainfed low land T.Aman rice suffers drought stress in the north-western region of Bangladesh. Several characters are associated with drought tolerance. Among these deep rooting ability is an avoidance mechanism. An experiment was conducted to determine some root characters of T. Aman cultivars/ breeding lines and find out interrelationship among different root characters in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur in 1999. The variety Pajam II, BR31, a land race - Aman Sardar and advance breeding lines BR5970-14-1-3 produced about 60 cm long roots. BR30, KDML105, BR5969-3-2, Daelkhani, Super fast, IR5149-AC5-4 and BR5331-93-2-8-4 produced more than 50 cm long roots. BR30 had the highest rooting ability. BR5970-14-1-3 had the highest root length density of 0.44 cm/cm3. Testing potentiality for rooting ability under controlled condition appears to be much easier and reliable compared to the field condition. Among different root characters, root length density at deeper soil depth exhibits the most reliable indicator for deep rooting ability. Root length density at deeper soil depth should be combined with root penetration ability for characterizing deep rooting ability of a target variety under rainfed culture.

Objectives:

To determine some root characters of some T. Aman cultivars/ breeding lines and find out interrelationship among different root characters.

Methodology:

Thirty-day old seedlings were transplanted in root elongation tubes. The root elongation tubes were prepared by 60 cm long PVC tubes having 13 cm diameter and perforations at the bottom. The tubes were installed in plastic buckets filled up with puddle soil. The tubes were also filled up with puddle soil fertilized with 0.5 g urea. Each tube had 3 seedlings. At 40 days after transplanting, the roots of the different tubes were harvested. The longest root length of the test varieties, root length density at 40-60 cm depth and total root weights were recorded.

Root length varied between >60 cm and 30 cm among the test entries. Pajam II and BR31 produced 62 cm long roots and Aman Sardar –a land race 60 cm long root. Among the advance breeding lines BR5970-14-1-3 produced 59 cm long roots. The entries which produced more than 50 cm long roots are BR30, KDML105, BR5969-3-2, Daelkhani, Super fast, IR5149-AC5-4 and BR5331-93-2-8-4. Minikit and Gheegoj produced only 30 cm long roots. The root weight varied between 7.88gms and 3 gms among the test entries. BR4766-3B-1 produced the heaviest roots and BR5970-14-1-3 had the smallest amount of root mass. The root shoot ratio varied between 641 mg and 222 mg among the cultivars and advance breeding lines. BR30 had the highest rooting ability and BR4384-2B-2-5 had the lowest rooting ability. The root length density within 40-60 cm depth widely. BR5970-14-1-3 had the highest root length density of 0.44 cm/cm3 while roots of some of the entries like Basmati370, Rajshahi1042 could not reach 40 cm depth. Aman Sardar and BR5331-93-2-8-4 produced high amount of root length density.
