Screening Rice Varieties for Residual Carbohydrate Content After Submergence

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In low lying areas flash flood submergence is a chronic problem for T.Aman rice. The recovery ability of plants during post submergence period is an important character to compensate the loss due to flash flood submergence. An experiment was conducted to determine the relationship of residual carbohydrate content and elongation of a variety with recovery score after submergence in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur in 2000. Generally, higher the residual carbohydrate content better was the recovery growth of submerged plants. FR13A had excellent recovery growth which had the lowest depletion of CHO. Performance of some of the entries exhibited that factors other than CHO depletion are involved in recovery growth during post submergence period. Apparently plant elongation during submergence had a negative association with recovery growth during post submergence period. FR13A had excellent recovery during post submergence period exhibiting only 44% plant elongation. All the elongating varieties did not show poor recovery growth but all those exhibited poor recovery growth was elongating type.

Objectives:

To determine the relationship between residual carbohydrate content of a variety and recovery score after submergence.
To find the relationship between plant elongation and recovery score after submergence.

Methodology:

Twenty-five rice cultivars collected from Barisal, 5 modern varieties and FR13A –highly tolerant varieties were used in the study. The sprouted seeds were sown in lines in steel trays containing puddle soil mixed with Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum @ 3-3-2-1 g/tray. The tray dimension was 50 cm X 40 cm X 15 cm. The seedlings were allowed to grow for 20 days. At 20 days of seedling age, 10 plants were sampled to determine CHO content before submergence. Then the plants were submerged in 70 cm deep turbid water for 9 days. After that the water was drained off and 10 plants were collected to determine the residual carbohydrate content. Rest of the plants were allowed to recover. The recovery score was made using 1-9 scale. One was scored for excellent recovery and 9 for the dead plant.

Recovery score was found to be linearly associated with residual carbohydrate content. Higher the residual carbohydrate content better was the recovery growth of a submerged entry. Among the entries, FR13A had excellent recovery growth which had the lowest depletion of CHO. Arman Sardar, Hechua, Mothamota, Kumragoir, Kachamota and Dudmona had good recovery growth and their CHO depletion percent varied between 48.96 and 52.8%. However, some of the entries like Lalchikon, Shitabhog mota, Maulata had good recovery growth but exhibited more than 60% depletion of CHO indicating factors other than CHO depletion are involved in recovery growth during post submergence period. Generally lower the plant elongation better was the recovery growth. FR13A had excellent recovery during post submergence period exhibiting only 44% plant elongation. On the other hand, BR5 had about 115% plant elongation. Although Hechua had 75% plant elongation, it exhibited good recovery growth.
