Chlorophyll Stability Under Submergence

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In low lying areas flash flood submergence is a chronic problem for T. Aman rice. The recovery ability of plants during post submergence period is an important character to compensate the loss due to flash flood submergence. An experiment was conducted to find out the nature of chlorophyll stability of tolerant and non-tolerant varieties in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur in 2000. Irrespective of tolerant and non-tolerant varieties, chlorophyll content degraded under submergence. Tolerant cultivar FR13A had 2.93 mg/g FW chlorophyll. Due 9 days submergence only 7% decrease in chlorophyll content was observed in tolerant cultivar FR13A under uncovered condition. Chlorophyll degradation was higher when light penetration in the water was reduced. Under covered condition it was about 28% in FR13A and 54-57% in Arman Sardar and Hechua. Chlorophyll degradation of non-tolerant varieties were remarkably higher compared to tolerant varieties which was more than 80-90% in all the susceptible cultivars under the same condition.

Objectives:

To find out the nature of Chlorophyll stability of tolerant and non-tolerant varieties.

Methodology:

Sprouted seeds of 7 different cultivars including FR13A and BR5 were seeded in tin trays containing puddle soil fertilized with Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum @ 3-3-2-1 g/tray. At 20 days after seeding, leaf sheath of 10 seedlings were sampled to determine chlorophyll content before submergence. Then the plants were submerged in 70 cm deep turbid water for 9 days under the covered and uncovered condition. Chlorophyll of seedlings were again extracted after submergence and measured.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the varieties Lalchikon-2 had the highest amount of chlorophyll content followed by Arman Sardar. FR13A-a submergence tolerant cultivar had chlorophyll content of 2.93 mg/g FW. After 9 days of submergence all the varieties including FR13A had a decrease in chlorophyll content. However, the reduction in chlorophyll content was the least in FR13A and highest in BR5. FR13A had 7% decrease in chlorophyll content under uncovered condition and about 28% decrease in covered condition. The other tolerant cultivars Arman Sardar and Hechua had 28-30% decrease in chlorophyll content under uncovered condition and 54-57% under covered condition. All the susceptible cultivars had more than 60% decrease in chlorophyll content under uncovered condition and more than 80-90% reduction under covered condition.
