Screening Advance Breeding Lines for Tolerance to Flash Flood in T.aman’2000

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In low lying areas flash flood submergence is a chronic problem for T.Aman rice. The recovery ability of plants during post submergence period is an important character to compensate the loss due to flash flood submergence. To identify advance breeding lines and some T.Aman varieties which can recover from flash flood submergence an experiment was conducted in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur in 2000. Six advance breeding lines namely BR777-11-2-4-1, BR5996-29-2-4-1, BR6794-27-2-2-3, BR6398-12-2, BR6132-13-2-4-1, BR6415-22-3 were not affected by flash flood submergence. Among the T.Aman varieties BRRI dhan39, BR25 and BR22 were least affected by flash flood submergence.

Objectives:

To identify advance breeding lines and some T.Aman varieties which can recover from flash flood submergence

Methodology:

Thirty-day-old seedlings of 23 advance breeding lines and 9 varieties namely BR11, BR22 (Tall), BR22 (Interm), BR25, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32, BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan39 were transplanted in earthen pots containing 6 kg puddle soil mixed with Urea, TSP, MP @ 3-2-2 g/tray. Each entry was transplanted in 6 pots-3 for submergence treatment and 3 for non-submergence. AT 14 DAT, the plants were submerged in 100 cm deep turbid water. The plants were submerged for 10 days. Seven days after the drainage of water both submerged and non-submerged control pants received g Urea. AT panicle initiation stage, both and non-submerged plants received 2 gms of Urea again.

Achievement/Findings:

The submerged plants appeared to be damaged due to flash flood submergence. However, most of the plants recover vigorously by producing new tillers rapidly. These new tillers produced panicles. Most of the test entries had reduction in total panicle eight due submergence stress. However, some of the entries like –BR777-11-2-4-1, BR5996-29-2-4-1, BR6794-27-2-2-3, BR6398-12-2, BR6132-13-2-4-1, BR6415-22-3 were not affected by flash flood submergence. These entries when submerged for 10 days produced higher or similar number of panicles to the non submerged plants. These need to be critically retested for confirming their performance under flash flood submergence. Among the recommended varieties BRRI dhan39, BR25 and BR22 were also not affected by flash flood submergence.
