Effect of Different Storage Conditions on Seed Quality of Okra (abelmoschus Esculentus L. Moench)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To study the effect of different storage condition on seed quality, okra seeds were stored in three kinds of storage container namely; tin container, polythene bag and gunny bag at room temperature from 22^nd March to 18^th May 2006. The germination and moisture percentage of seeds after 5, 14, 28, 35, and 43 days of storage were measured. The highest seed moisture (%) was found in polythene bag (12.47%) and the lowest in Gunny bag (9.03%), respectively, while, the lowest range of moisture (%) was found in Tin container (10.65-11.63%) and the highest in Gunny bag (9.03-12%). The mean moisture (%) in Tin container, Polythene bag and Gunny bag were 11.13, 11.23 and 10.61% respectively. The highest seed germination was found in polythene bag and the lowest in Gunny bag. It was also found that higher the seed moisture, lower the seed germination and vice-versa.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different storage conditions on seed quality of okra

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted from March to May 2006 at BSMRAU, Salna, Gazipur. Fresh, dried, cleaned and graded okra seeds were stored in three kinds of storage condition namely; i) Tin container , ii) Polythene bag and iii) Gunny bag with an amount of 1 kg seeds in each container having similar moisture content. The temperature and moisture of store were measured during storage. The daily temperature was recorded from wet bulb an dry bulb thermometer. The RH (%) was recorded from the Psychrometric chart by using wet and dry bulb thermometer temperature. Seed moisture and germination percentage were measured after 5,14,28,35, and 43 days of storage.Sand method was used to measure the germination percentage. Fifty seeds were sown in line in a plastic box with four replications having sand. The final count of seedlings was taken after seven days of seeding following the rules of ISTA. The moisture percentage was measured according to the low constant oven dry method during the same day when the seeds were sown for germination. During seed moisture determination, three different kinds of weight in gram was taken namely i) container plus cover weight (M₁) ii) container plus cover weight before during (M₂) and iii) container plus cover and seed weight after drying (M₃). The moisture percentage of the seed was measured according to the following formula-

Moisture content (%)= (M₂-M₃)/(M₂-M₁)x 100

Finally, the effect of different storage conditions were studied and compared by using statistical analysis and graphs.
