Study on the Sorption and Retention Behavior of Phosphorus in Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in the laboratory of department of soil science, BAU, Mymensingh during 2002 with eight selected soils (0-15 cm depth) form four AEZs of Bangladesh to determine the sorption and retention of phosphorus. Sorption solutions of different concentrations for P (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75 and 100mg/L) were prepared by dissolving KH₂PO₄ in distilled water. Five gm of soil were taken in each of 24 bottles earmarked for P retention study for each soil triplicates. Fifty mm of sorption solution of each concentration was added to respective bottles and kept for 15 days for P sorption. Result of the experiment showed that the sorption of P increased in all soils with increasing concentrations. The maximum of P varied between 735 and 914 mg/Kg where the lowest and highest amount was found in Tejgoan and Melandho soils. In general, the rate of sorption was higher in soils of Khulna series compared to others.

Objectives:

To study the eight selected soil of Bangladesh in order to get an idea on the p sorption capacity of different soils

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in BAU, Mymensingh during 2002. Soil samples were collected from eight different soil series i.e. young Bramaputra and Jamuna flood plain, old Bramaputra floodplain, Madhupur tract and northern and eastern hills. Soils were taken from 0-15 cm depth. All debris were removed from the soil before grinding. For each soil 2 kg of soils were stored with labeling for subsequent study. For studying the phosphate retention capacity 5 gm soil was taken in each 24 bottles selected from each soil in triplicates. A stock of 1000 mg P/l was prepared by dissolving KH₂PO₄ in distilled water. Working solution of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75 and 100mg P/L were prepared by diluting the stock solution. Fifty mm of working solutions were added in each of the bottles sample earmarked for each concentration and shaken for 30 min twice daily for a period of 15 days. After that centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 5 min and filtrated with filter paper. The P concentration in equilibrium extracts was determined calorimetrically by stannous chloride reduce phosphomolybdate blue colour method. The difference in P con between the added P solution and the equilibrium P solution con was considered the amount o f P sorbed by soil. P adsorption isotherm was prepared taking the equilibrium solution concentration in the x axis and the amount of adsorption in the Y axis. The PH of the soil was measured PH meter. Conductivity meter was used to measure the CE of soil in suspension of soil to water ratio of 1:5. Organic carbon of the soil was calculated by multiplying percent organic carbon with Van Bemmelen factor of 1.73. The equilibrium solution was analyzed for determining of P by flame photometer and spetophotometer. The pH and EC of the equilibrium soil solution was measured by using glass electrode pH meter and conductivity meter respectively. The EC values converted into ionic strength by using the formula u= 0.013XEC (mS/cm).
