Salt stress is a major constraint across many rice producing areas because of the high sensitivity of modern rice varieties to salinity. To identify advance breeding lines which can tolerate salinity, an experiment was conducted in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur  during T.aman season in 2008. Out of 49 breeding lines, 16 lines namely IR78769-4R-1, CSR28, IR61919-3B-7-2, IR61919-3B-14-3, IR61919-3B-15-3, IR64197-3B-14-2, IR64197-3B-15-2, IR50184-3B-18-2B-1, IR68652-3B-20-3, IR68652-3B-30-2, IR68654-3B-9-1, IR72829-3R-2-1, IR72048-B-R-2-2-2-1, IR72048-B-R-16-2-3-3, IR71895-3R-9-3-1-B and IR71907-3R-2-1-2 showed very high tolerance at seedling stage and recommended to include in the PVS trials (mother trial) for selection by the researchers. The line number CSR28, IR64197-3B-14-2 and IR64197-3B-15-2 showed very good tolerance at the whole growth period (both in seedling and reproductive stage) and these lines are recommended for direct to Baby trials as well as RYT to see the yield performance at different locations.

To identify tolerant progenies for the development rice varieties tolerant to salinity.

Sixty (60) advance breeding and PVS lines supplied by Plant Breeding Division for the T.Aman season, 2008. Screening at seedling stage was done according to the method describe by Gregorio et al. 1997. After scoring, stressed seedlings of five highly tolerant lines (CSR28, IR64197-3B-14-2, IR64197-3B-15-2, IR68654-3B-9-1 and IR71907-3R-2-1-2) along with three checks Pokkali, FL378 and IR29 transplanted into perforated pot containing normal soils placed into bigger plastic bowl. The stress was imposed after establishment of the seedlings through changing the tap water by 6 dSm-1 saline water and keeps this level up to maturity.

Out of 49 tested lines 16 were found tolerant to seedling stage. The average visual score of these selected 16 lines varied from 3 to 5. However, CSR28, IR64197-3B-14-2, IR64197-3B-15-2  and IR71907-3R-2-1-2 has the average score 3.0 similar as to Pokkali i.e. the lines showing very high tolerance at seedling stage and less than 10% leaf damage during scoring. The other selected 10 lines had the score from 4.5 to 5.0 i.e. these lines were moderately tolerant but deserved further investigation at the reproductive phase. Due to the high tolerance at seedling stage, the genotypes deserved further investigation the reproductive tolerance (though seedling tolerance is weakly associated with reproductive tolerance). Accordingly, 5 highly tolerant lines (CSR28, IR64197-3B-14-2, IR64197-3B-15-2, IR68654-3B-9-1 and IR71907-3R-2-1-2) were transplanted in pots for reproductive stage screening at 12 dSm-1salinity level. Three lines CSR28, IR64197-3B-14-2 and IR64197-3B-15-2 showed tolerance at the reproductive stage and produced some yield at the moderate salinity level i.e. 6 dSm-1. Surprisingly, the stressed seedlings of Pokkali, and FL378 died earlier and did not produce any yield.
