Performance of Radish, Tomato and Soybean During the First Year of Lohakat (zylia Dolabiformis) Plantation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Agroforestry Farm at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October 2008 to March 2009 to find out the performance (growth and yield) of tomato, radish and soybean under different distance from the Zylia dolabiformis tree. The aim of the study was to select the suitability of the above vegetables for the Agroforestry system. The different treatments of the experiment viz. T₀ (open field), T₁ (1 feet distance from tree), T₂ (2 feet distance from tree), T₃ (3 feet distance from tree), T₄ (4 feet distance from tree), T₅ (5 feet distance from tree). The experiment was laid out in RCBD for all three vegetables with 3 replications separately. The result of the experiment revealed that the yield contributing characters of the vegetables increased gradually with the increase of planting distance from the tree. In t oma t o , i t was found that open field produced hi ghest number frui t s (19.33) plant^-1, number of fruit (3.59) cluster^-1, fruit diameter (27.32 mm), fruit weight (51.55 g), yield plant^-1 (997.13 g) and yield (70.11 t/ha) which is statistically similar to treatment T₅. But the growth characters of Zylia dolabiformis tree are not satisfactory in association with tomato. In radish, the highest value of yield contributing parameters such as number of leaves at harvest period (11.33), root length (22.45 cm), diameter of root plant^-1 (4.18 cm), yield plant^-1 (203.28 g), total yield (20.97 t/ha) was found under open field but in the treatment T₅. We also found nearest result to the highest value. The growth characters of Zylia dolabiformis tree are quite better in association with radish than tomato. In soybean, the highest value of yield contributing characters such as number of frui ts (19.33) plant^-1, number of fruit (3.59) cluster^-1, fruit diameter (44.82 mm), fruit weight (51.55 g), yield plant^-1(997.13 g) and yield per hectare (70.11t/ha) were recorded in open fiend which is statistically similar to treatment T₅. But the growth characters of Zylia dolabiformis tree are found higher in association with soybean so we may recommended that growing of soybean at 5 feet distance from Zylia dolabiformis tree is the best tree-crop combination in Agroforestry system.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental farm, Department of Agroforestry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October, 2008 to March, 2009. The experimental site is geographically located at about 24º75´ North latitude and 90º50´ East longitudes. In this study three winter vegetables, such as: Radish (Raphanus sativits L.) Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), Soybean [Glycine max L.) were grown in association with 8 months old Lohakat (Zylia dolabiformis) saplings. Each vegetable were laid using the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications as separate experiment. Individual plot size was 9ft x 2ft. In each experiment vegetables are grown at different distance from tree base which were treated as treatment. For every experiment treatments were as; T₀ = Open field (without trees) - control; T₁ = 1 feet distance from the tree; T₂ = 2 feet distance from the tree; T₃ = 3 feet distance from the tree; T₄ = 4 feet distance from the tree and T₅ = 5 feet distance from the tree. Zylia dolabiformis Saplings are also grown without vegetables association as control. After land preparation Radish seeds were directly sown in the experimental plot on 18th November 2008. The seeds were sown continuously 30 cm apart lines. After emergence finally radish plants were thinned out maintaining 10 and 15 cm distance from plant to plant. Tomato seedlings (30 days old) were transplanted on 21st November 2008 in the experimental plot maintaining the spacing of 60 cm x 40 cm. Seedling planted in all plots were watered immediately after transplanting. Soybean seeds were sown in the experimental plot on 20th November 2008 by hand dibbling method at a depth of 4-5 cm maintaining the spacing of 20 x 15 cm from plant to plant. Necessary cultural operations were done for all vegetables. Plant samples of radish, tomato & soybean were collected randomly from the respective plots. Ten plant samples of radish, tomato & soybean were selected from each plot for data collection. In case of radish number of leaves, root length, root diameter plant^-1, weight root^-1; in case of tomato plant height, number of fruit plant^-1, number of fruit cluster^-1, fruit diameter, weight fruit^-1 and in case of soybean plant height, number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds pod^-1, number of seeds plant^-1, 100 grain weight were recorded from selected plnats of respective vegetables. Yields of all vegetables calculated as t/ha from recoded data of respective vegetables. Height (cm), girth (cm), leaf size (cm²) and number of leaves per Zylia dolabiformis saplings also measured during the harvesting period of vegetables. Data regarding various parameters under study from the experiment were statistically analyzed by the computer using statistical package programme MSTAT-C. Mean comparisons were done by DMRT (Duncan's Multiple Range Test) at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Yield of all vegetables were significantly lower with in the 1-2 feet distance from tree base i. e., During the first year of Zylia dolabiformis plantation all three vegetables can be grown successfully more than 3 feet distance from tree base. Zylia dolabiformis growth was comparatively lower in association with tomato than others i. e., radish and soybean can be successfully grown in association with Zylia dolabiformis plantation during early establishment period. Therefore, it may be concluded that both the tested vegetable are suitable in agroforestry practice, but degree of their suitability may be ranked as Soybean > Radish > Tomato.
