A Comparatve Economic Study of Hybrid and Inbred Rice Production: a Case Study

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study analyzes the assessment of Hybrid seed production cost at BRRI experimental station and comparative profitability of Hybrid rice Versus BRRI dhan28 and BRRI Dhan29 at the farm level The study reveals that cost of production for producing one-kilogram of seed was lower for BRRI Hybrid-1 (tk.56.47kg) compared to that of the proposed Hybrid lines IR6887H (Tk. 71.79kg). It was also observed the except seed use the of labour (family plus hired) and fertilizer was the higher in case of Hybrid rice compared to those of BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29. Though per hectare requirement of seed was higher for BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 the cost of Hybrid seed was the higher because of its high price. As a result, total cost of production for hybrid rice was the higher (Tk.3404.00/ha) compared to BRRI dhan28 (Tk.30935.00/ha and BRRI dhan29 (Tk.31612.00/ha). But the net return was higher in BRRI dhan29 (Tk.15660.00) followed by BRRI dhan28 (Tk.11881.00). Similarly benefit cost ratio was the higher in BRRI dhan29 followed by BRRI dhan28. Objectives:

Estimate the cost of hybrid rice seed production at the BRRI farm
Determine the comparative profitability of BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan 29 versus hybrid rice production Identify the constrains of hybrid rice cultivation at the farm level
Derive policy implication from the above.

Methodology:

Primary data from both BRRI Hybrid experimental plot and farm level wee used to conduct this study. For collecting the experimental data a continuous monitoring was done in different stages of Hybrid rice seed production. All necessary information was carefully recorded from the experimental plot using structured questionnaire. To conduct the research at farm level Chuadanga district was selected purposely where both inbreed and Hybrid rice was cultivated. Two upazila from the district was selected considering the intensity of Boro rice cultivation. Five villages from each upazila and 10 Hybrid rice producers and 10 BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dahn29 producers from each village were selected at random. The number of sample was 200(10*5*2*2). A pre-designed questionnaire was also used to collect the farm level data Boro season in 2004. Both descriptive statistics and partial budgeting technique were used to determine the profitability of inbred and Hybrid rice cultivation in the survey area.
