Performance of Breeding Lines Against Salinity Stress at Reproductive Stage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A vast area (about 1m ha) in Bangladesh is affected by different degree of salinity levels in which farmers are cultivating local varieties due to lack of modern salinity tolerant varieties. Rice plant succumbs to salinity stress at any stage but usually it affects at the reproductive stage in T. Aman season and at seedling stage in Boro season. BRRI already developed 3 modern salinity tolerant varieties in which BRRI dhan40 and BRRI dhan41 for T. Aman season and BRRI dhan47 for Boro season. Now BRRI is trying to develop more tolerant variety for both T. Aman and Boro season having high yield potential. Therefore, an experiment was conducted in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur during T.aman season in 2008 to identify breeding lines tolerant to salinity stress at seedling stage as well as whole growth period. Out of 7 tested genotypes, BR7084-310-AC2-7 performed good followed by BR7084-310-AC2-2 and BR7084-310-AC3-1. Although genotypes BR7084-310-AC2-2, BR7084-310-AC2-7 and BR7084-310-AC3-1 were performed better regarding the tolerance against salinity at reproductive phase in control condition but the yielding ability of these tested lines may be retested in natural condition (BRRI R/S, Satkhira and Sonagazi).

Objectives:

To identify breeding lines tolerant to salinity stress at seedling stage as well as whole growth period.

Methodology:

A total of 7 breeding lines with 2 check varieties namely Pokkali (non-sensitive) and IR29 (sensitive) were tested for salinity tolerance at productive phase. It was noted that, these 7 breeding lines were selected out of 25 breeding lines supplied by Biotechnology Division, BRRI from previous year's experimental results having salinity tolerance score 3 at vegetative phase The seedlings were grown in culture solution and 25 days old seedlings were transplanted in plastic bucket containing Yoshida's culture solution. The P^H of the culture solution was checked daily and maintained at 5. At reduction division stage, NaCl was added in the culture solution to achieve the EC at 4 and 6 dSm^-1. The salinity level was maintained daily and this salinity was done upto maturity. In one set, no salinization was done which was treated as control.

Achievement/Findings:

The yield of all the genotypes was reduced significantly with the increase of salinity level. Accordingly the shoot weight was also reduced with the increase of salinity level. The least yield reduction was found in Pokkali (2.4 and 17.2% at 4 and 6 dSm^-2) which was followed by BR7084-310-AC2-7 (24.54, 43.77) and BR7084-310-AC2-2 (11.22, 51.40) genotypes. The performance of the genotypes BR7084-310-AC3-1 was remarkably good upto 4 dSm^-1but the yield was reduced drastically at 6 dSm^-1. Performance of other genotypes regarding the shoot and yield reduction due to salinity was not satisfactory.
