Accumulation of Trace Metals in Soils and Plants from Industrial Effluents

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in soils and rice plant have been estimated in the nearby zone of the Epyllion dyeing industry at Bangla Bazar, Gazipur Sadar, Gazipur, Bangladesh. Accumulations of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in soils after harvesting of T. Aman (BR11) were found very high. The order of metal contents in soils was found to be Fe>Mn>Cu>Zn. Concentrations of these elements in rice plant was found at excessive level. The variation in Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn concentrations in different parts of rice plant were observed, which were in the order roots>straw>husk>grain.

Objectives:

1. To investigate the concentration of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in soils and crops (rice) in the vicinity of a dyeing industry at Gazipur Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experimental site is located at 24.050 north latitude and 90.220 east longitude with an elevation of 8.4 m from the mean sea level. The study was conducted during August to December 2008 in the nearby zone of the Epyllion dyeing industry at Bangla Bazar, Gazipur Sadar, Gazipur using BR11 rice variety (T. Aman) under the management of the farmers. The area of the study field was about 2 ha, which is 100 m away from the discharge point of effluent of the dyeing industry. The field was divided into 3 blocks and each block was then subdivided into 11 plots including one uncontaminated plot considering the distance from the source of the effluent (100-120, 120-140, 140- 160, 160-180, 180-200, 200-220, 220-240, 240- 260, 260-280, 280-300 m, and uncontaminated or control). Therefore, there were 11 treatments in the study which were laid down in a randomized complete block design using three blocks. Every treatment was assigned in each block randomly. The soil and crop samples were collected at harvest. Topsoil (0-15 cm) samples were collected from each and every plot using auger. The soils were dried at room temperature in a well aerated room and then ground, sieved and kept into plastic bags for laboratory analysis. The whole rice plant washed properly using distilled water, separated into roots, straw, grain and husk and dried at room temperature for 2-3 days, then putting in a paper bag samples were dried in an oven at 75⁰C until a constant weight received then ground, sieved and kept into plastic pots with proper labeling for laboratory analysis. The soil and plant samples were analyzed in the laboratory following the standard methodologies. Soil samples were analyzed for pH, OM, total nitrogen, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn. Soil pH was measured by glass electrode pH meter using soilwater ratio 1:2:5. Organic matter content was estimated by wet oxidation method and the total N content by micro-Kjeldahl method. Copper (Cu), Fe, Mn and Zn contents were estimated by DTPA extraction contents.
