Efficacy of Vermicompost and Conventional Compost of Chilli Cultivation Through Ipns Basis

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiment was conducted to determine vermicompost and conventional compost in combination with chemical fertilizers on the yield by chilli at Gazipur. There were twelve treatments T₁= 100% recommended dose of chemical fertilizer dose N₉₀ P ₆₀K₉₀ S₁₅ Zn₃ kg N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1, T₂ = 80% RDCF, T₃ = 60% RDCF, T₄ = 100% RDCF + VC @ 1 t ha^-1, T₅ = 80% RDCF + VC @ 2 t ha^-1, T₆ = 60% RDCF +VC@ 3 t ha^-1, T₇ = VC@ 6 t ha^-1, T₈ = 100% RDCF +CC@ 1 t ha^-1, T₉ = 80% RDCF +CC @ 2 t ha^-1, T₁₀= 60% RDCF +CC @ 3 t ha", T₁₁ = CC @ 6 t ha', T₁₂ = Absolute control. The experiment was laid out in a randomize complete block design replicated 3 times. Results revealed that the T5 (80% RDCF + 2 t VC ha^-1) produced the highest fruit yield 9.79 t ha^-1 and lowest 4.04 t ha^-1 in control treatment. An inclusion of 2 t VC ha^-1 with 80% RDCF can reduce 20% of chemical fertilizer. Integrated use of VC at the rate of 2 t ha^-1 with 80% RDCF dose were found to be the best combinations in respect of chilli yield and fertility management by enriching the soil with organic matter.

Objectives:

1. To study the effect of vermicompost and conventional compost on the growth and yield of chilli;

2. To determine the optimum rate of vermicompost and conventional compost for chilli cultivation; and

3. To minimize the use of chemical fertilizer in presence of vermicompost and conventional compost.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at Central farm, BARI, Gazipurusing the chilli variety BARI chilli-I, was initiated from kharif seasons of 2014. The source of VC were cowdung and kitchen waste (3:1) processed by epigeic earthworm activities. CC is a traditional mixed liters, crop residues and cowdung without earthworm activities. The initial soil samples of the experimental field were collected and analyzed following standard methods. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2m x 2 m with spacing of 40cm x 40cm. Thirty days old chilli seedlings were transplanted on 12 February 2014. All the intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested eight times after the fruit maturity. The field data on important parameters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants for analysis. The data were collected on plant height, number of branch, fruit number/plant, , fruit weight per plant and yield (t ha^-1). Data on different yield contributing parameters and yield were recorded and analyzed statistically and adjusted with least significant difference (LSD) at 5% level of significance. Soil pH was measured by a combined glass calomel electrode (Jakson, 1958).Organic carbon determination by wet oxidation method (Walkley and Black). Total N was determined by modified Kjeldahl method. Ca and Mg were determined by NH₄OAc extraction method. K, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were determined by DTPA extraction followed by AAS reading. Boron was determined by CaCl₂ extraction method. Phosphorus was determined by Bray and Kurtz method (Acid soils) and Modified Olsen method (Neutral + Calcareous soils). S was determined by CaH₄(PO₄)2.H₂O extraction followed by turbidimetric turbidity method with BaCl₂.

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded from 151 year studies at Gazipur that Integrated use of VC @ 2 t ha^-1 with N₅₈P_32.2K_57.4S_6.6Zn_2.4 kg ha^-1 were found optimum for chilli production.
