Determination of Suitable Row Ratio and Dosages of Ga3 of a Selected Promising Hybrid Rice Variety During Boro Season 2013-14

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted out at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur, during November to May 2013-14 to study the effect of GA₃ and row ratio of restorer and CMS lines on different characters and F₁ seed production of promising hybrid. The treatments were of five levels of GA₃ viz. (i) control, (ii) 80 g ha^-1, (iii) 160 g ha^-1 (iv) 240 g ha^-1, and (v) 320 g ha^-1 and five row ratios (R:A) viz. (i) 2:6, (ii) 2:8, (iii) 2:10, (iv) 2:12 and (v) 2:14. The highest F₁seed yield (3.49 t ha^-1) of promising hybrid was obtained with an application of GA₃ @ 240 g ha^-1 which enhanced the maximum number of effective tillers, the highest number of grains panicle^-1, panicle exertion rate and outcrossing rate. The lowest seed yield (0.97 t ha^-1) was produced without application of GA₃ i.e. control. The interaction between GA₃ and row ratio of restorer and CMS lines was significant for F₁seed yield. The application of GA₃ @ 240 g ha^-1 at the row ratio of 2:10 (R: A) had maximum significant effects on seed yield of this promising hybrid combination.

Objectives:

To assess the performance of promising hybrid (BRRI33A/BRRI31R) for production of F₁ seed and related characters upon applications of GA₃ at different concentration and the proper row ratio of restorer and CMS lines.

Methodology:

This study was undertaken at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season during November to May 2013-14.The restorer line (R) BRRI31R and CMS line (A) BRRI33A developed by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), have been used as parent material in the experiment. The line BRRI31R and BRRI33A matures after 150 days and 147 days, respectively. Number of rows for different treatments was different such as 2:6, 2:8, 2:10 2:12 and 2:14. To accommodate varying number of rows, plot size was also varied accordingly. Row directions were perpendicular to wind direction. To ensure easy dispersal of pollen and higher cross pollination of panicles of CMS plant, flag leaf clipping is very important.
