Economics of Puffed Rice (muree) Producton and Marketing in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to know the socio economic conditions of the muree productions and consumption pattern of the consumers and problems of muree production. The study reveals that 55% producers had no land except homestead area. Swarna, an Indian rice variety was mostly used in muree production in Dinajpur area while a popular local T.Amon variety was used in Barisal area for puffed rice production. Producers of both the districts depended on millers supplied rice for muree production. Quantity sold and price of muree was higher during the Holy month of Ramadan due to higher consumers demand. About 42% fuel cost was incurred in muree production in both the locations. The producers earned very low profit (Tk. 30504/year) out of this business. The main reasons for accepting this business were inherited profession, availability of no other good alternative job and no cultivable owner land. High price of rice high fuel cost and lack of working capital were the main problems in muree production. The study suggests some remedial measure like availability of easy loan and lower fuel price to solve these problems.International Journal of Bio Research

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two puffed rice producing districts namely Dinajpur and Barisal as the rural people of these districts has been commercially produce puffed rice for long time. Two Upazilla under each districts were selected purposively considering the intensity of puffed rice production in those areas. From a comprehensive list of puffed rice producers under the Eight villages (taking two from each Upazilla) were selected purposively as every villagers did not produce this item. A total of 120 (15 from each village) respondents were randomly selected. Data were collected using pre-designed questionnaire. Tabular method was used for presentation of the findings. Statistics like mean, cv etc were used.

Socio economies conditions of the muree producers are poor. Majority of them are illiterate and landless Swarna, an Indian variety is popular in Dinajpur and Nachochimota a local T.Amon variety is popular in Barisal for muree production. Both the price and quantity of rice higher in the month of October- November (Ramadan) in both the districts. Price and quantity of muree sold is also higher in the same period. Fuel cost is very important factor for muree production in both districts. Highest profit is earned in the month of Ramadan and lowest in September-October in both the districts Average monthly professions were earned are Tk.2348 in Dinajpur and Tk. 2736 in Barisal. The main reasons for accepting this profession were finding no other alternative good job and having no cultivable owned land. Producers ere not satisfied at their business because of very low profit and troublesome work. Low price of muree and high price, high fuel cost and lack of working capital are main problems in muree production. Introduction of mechanization in muree production is great challenge for the survival of the muree producers. Easy loan availability and supply of fuel at a lower cost may solve these problems to some extent.
