A survey was conducted for post loss assessment of onion due to bacterial soft rot disease during 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 crop seasons  among  the onion growers/farmers and different markets of Bangladesh. Results showed that the farmers stored onion in their houses mainly on ceiling system of their houses and some of the farmers stored in flooring system. The mean percentages of loss recorded in pabna district as 7.88% and 16.83% in ceiling and flooring system respectively, where as 5.91 and 13.13% recorded in Faridpur district at ceiling and flooring system respectively. Percentage of loss always higher in flooring system in both the districts. Month wise loss was recorded, 22.0% in September in flooding system and ceiling system highest loss was recorded in the month of August (9.89%).  Finding of survey also revealed that loss were always higher if rainfall occurred before harvesting of onion and no regular supervision performed by the farmers during storage. At markets and transport level, the highest percentage of loss recorded 6.07% at Rangpur pouromarket in Rangpur districts and minimum was 2.74% at Bera Bazar in Pabna District, The average loss of five areas was 4.31%. Variety wise loss of five districts was 1.38% in deshi variety but 7.24% was recorded in Indian variety. The average loss deshi and Indian variety 4.31%. Category wise total loss assessment of onion in the surveyed area was summarized and it was found that storage amount was 235.20 mt. of two categories and total loss was 13.74 mt. The highest loss was recorded 7.00% in farmers' level and grand mean loss was 5.84% of two categories in five districts. Though mean loose percentage were low but in some cases soft rot infection of recorded up to 22.0% at farmers' level in flooring system and 25.0% was at market/transport level in Indian variety. From the above findings it may be concluded that disease and wound free fresh and mature onion should be stored and proper management practice should be ensure during storage period to reduce soft rot damage of onion.

To determine the post harvest loss assessment of onion due to Bacterial soft rot

A survey was conducted for post harvest loss assessment of onion due to bacterial soft rot disease during 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 crop seasons in Bangladesh. Questionnaire preparation and compilation of collected data  were done  at bangabandhu sheikh  Mujibur Rahman agriculture university, Salna, Gazipur. The survey was conducted at different location of Bangladesh at different levels of post harvest activities. Selection of the study area: In order to perform smoothly the stud on post harvest loss assessment requires careful selection of an area or more areas which are particularly representative for the study of the selected crops. According to yang (1962) "the area in which farm business survey is to be carried out depends on the particular purpose of the survey and the possible cooperation of the farmer''. Considering this and as well as the objectives of the study Pabna, Faridpur, Rangpur, munshigonj, Dinajpur and Gazipur districts were selected purposively. The farmers of those localities have a long time experience for cultivation and storing of onion. In farmer's level, two upzillas were selected from each district of Pabna and Faridpur districts to collect the farm level data. In another study, five districts namely Rngpur, Munshigonj, Pabna, Faridpur and Gazipur were selected to collect transport and markets level data. One market and ten respondents were selected from each district to collect loss assessment data. Before final selection the study area the main considerations in selection the areas were as follows:

  • There are a large numbers of area were under onion cultivation and the farmers of these areas have a long experience on onion cultivation and storage.
  • Cooperation from the respondents was expected to be satisfactory, so that the reliability of data could be maintained.
