Relative Farming Efficiency for Crop Production in North-west Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Farm efficiency implies best utilization of available farm resources to produce maximum outputs but low adoption of technologies along with land fragmentation, week irrigation infrastructure, ineffective extension services, restricted access to credit etc are constraints for best utilization of resources. The study was conducted for determination of farming efficiency of participatory and non-participatory farmers in ICM project areas. A total of 120 farmers in each site were selected following stratified random sampling technique for collecting data. Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function model were employed to measure the farm efficiency. Net return and benefit cost ratio (BCR) from crop production was higher in participant farms than non-participant farms. The farm specific technical efficiencies of participatory farmers at Kurigram was 13% higher compared to non-participant farmers in T. Aman season, whereas it was 12% in Boro season. In Pirganj, Thakurgaon technical efficiencies of participatory farmers was 17% higher compared to non-participarory farmers in T. Aman season and it was 19% during Boro season. The improved skillness of participatory farmers was congenial for getting higher net return in project areas.

Objectives:

To assess the impact of the integrated crop management (ICM) project activities on farm income between participatory and non-participatory farmers; and
To compare the farm-specific technical efficiency between participatory and non-participatory farmers.

Methodology:

Stratified random sampling technique was followed for collecting data. One hundred twenty farmers from Kurigram, Pirganj and Thakurgaon were randomly selected of which 60 were participatory and 60 non-participatory. In each location, 30 participatory and 30 non-participatory farmers were selected. Cobb-Douglas Stochastic Frontiers Model was used for measuring the technical efficiency between participatory and non-participatory farms.

Achievement/Findings:

In case of participatory farmers, the technical efficiency scores for the T. Aman and MV Boro were 0.95 for T. Aman and 0.91 for MV Boro production. On the other hand, in case of non-participatory farmers it was 0.84 and 0.81 for T. Aman and Boro production, respectively. It is clear that participatory farmers were more efficient than non-participatory farmers and achieve maximum technical efficiencies for rice production.
