Development and Release of BRRI Dhan43 for Direct Seeded Aus (upland) Condition in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Aus season during. The aim of this study was to develop and release of short duration and high yield potential rice variety for seeded Aus (Upland) conditions. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line BR5543-5-1-2-5 as BRRI dhan43 for Aus season in 2004. Plant height of the variety is 100 cm with 100 days growth duration. Average yield is about 3.5 t/ha and grain size is medium bold.

Objectives:

To develop high yield potential, moderately drought tolerance and lodging tolerance for direct seeded Aus (Upland) condition

Methodology:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Aus season. This variety was developed through hybridization. It is BR line with pedigree BR5543-5-1-2-5 (BR24/BR21). After fixation of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Trial (OT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trials (RYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was conducted to evaluate of promising breeding lines for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as a variety (s). Finally the Proposed Variety Trial (PVT) was done for On-farm evaluation of the proposed line by the NSB team for the recommendation of release a new variety. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BR21 (Std Ck) and Fulbadami (L Ck). The NSB has approved to release the proposed line BR5543-5-1-2-5.
