Study on Submergence Tolerance Under Dark Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Physiology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute to observe the performance of tolerant, moderately tolerant and susceptible varieties when light penetration in water is totally cut off. BR1, BR5 and FR13A were used as variety for this experiment. Under uncovered, all the varieties were alive but in dark condition only FR13A could survive for 9 days period of submergence. Both BR1 and BR5 were completely destroyed. The loss of chlorophyll content was remarkably rapid in BR1 and BR5 compared to than than in the tolerant genotype FR13A under uncovered condition. In all the varieties, the carbohydrate content depressed irrespective of covered or uncovered condition. The highest carbohydrate content of 5.68% was in BR1 which was followed by FR13A having 5.34% carbohydrate. BR5 had the lowest carbohydrate of 1.52%. In case of covered condition, at 9 days after submergence FR13A had highest carbohydrate content of 4.90%. But BR1, BR5 had 1.67% and 0.68% carbohydrate respectively.

Methodology:

BR1, BR5 and FR13A were used as variety for this experiment. Seedlings were grown in earthen pot containing soil fertilized with nutrient solution. At 30 DAS, the seedlings were uprooted and transplanted in tray containing peddled soil. Trays were submerged into clean water maintaining 70 cm water depth. For maintaining light quality one set of trays were covered by black cloth and another one set trays were uncovered.

Achievement/Findings:

Under dark condition the submergence tolerant FR13A had slow rate of depletion of stored carbohydrate compared to BR5 and BR1. It has also higher chlorophyll stability than that in BR5 and BR1. These two criteria are possibly important for submergence tolerance of FR13A.
