Influence of Different Rates of Nutrients and Planting Density on the Yield of BRRI Dhan44

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Farm, Gazipur in T. Aman season, 2006. Thirty days old seedling was transplanted on 27 August spaced at closer (20 cm × 15 cm), moderate (20 cm × 20 cm) and wider spacing (20 cm × 25 cm). Nutrients were 80-25-33-10 (BRRI recommendation), 107-33-44-13 (1/3rd more than BRRI recom.) and 53-17-23-7 (1/3rd less than BRRI recom.) kg ha^-1 of NPKS, respectively. BRRI dhan44 gave similar grain yield with BRRI recommended fertilizer dose and 1/3rd higher of the recommended rate. Closer spacing (20 cm × 15 cm) gave higher grain yield than wider spacing (20 cm × 25 cm).

Objectives:

The present study was initiated to find out the appropriate nutrient package and planting density of newly released BRRI dhan44.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Farm, Gazipur during T. Aman season, 2006. Thirty days old 2-3 seedlings hill^-1 was transplanted on 27 August spaced at closer (20 cm × 15 cm), moderate (20 cm × 20 cm) and wider (20 cm × 25 cm). Three level of nutrient packages used were 80-25-33-10 (BRRI recommendation), 107-33-44-13 (1/3rd more than BRRI recom.) and 53-17-23-7 (1/3rd less than BRRI recom.) kg/ha of NPKS, respectively. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Fertilizer packages were assigned randomly to the main plot (4m x 9m) and spacing in the subplots (4m x 3m). Blanket application of Phosphate, potash and sulphur were applied as triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively, to all plots at final land preparation as per treatment. Nitrogen as urea was top dressed in three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (DAT) in case of three levels of treatment (Bhuiyan and Shah, 1990). Supplemental irrigation was done particularly in the late season. Standing water in the field was drained out before 10 days of harvesting. The other intercultural operations including weeding and pest management were done as and when necessary as per recommended practices. Two spots were selected diagonally in each unit plot. A total of eight hills per plot (two × two hills in two sampling unit) were selected from the predetermined spots and the number of tillers was counted at 15 days intervals starting from 20 DAT to after panicle initiation stage and the final count were done at crop maturity. For yield components, three hills per plot were selected from three random spots and counted the number of panicles m^-2, grains panicle^-1, 1000 grains weight (g) and sterility percentage. At maturity, a sample of 5 m² area was harvested from the centre of each plot for grain yield. For straw yield, 1 m² area from each plot was collected outside the 5 m² harvest area, excluding two border lines all around. These hills were cut at the ground level and after panicle count, the grain were hand threshed. The grain yield was adjusted at 14 % moisture content and straw was dried well in sun light before weighing. Data were analyzed statistically by MSTAT and mean differences were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The variation of plant height, panicle number, grains panicle^-1, grain and straw yield, 1000 grains weight and sterility percentage among the treatments were insignificant irrespective of inputs level and plant spacing. BRRI dhan44 gave comparable grain yield with BRRI recommended fertilizer dose and 1/3rd higher the recommended rate. Closer spacing gave higher grain yield than wider spacing. However, BRRI dhan44 is a tidal flood tolerance and give higher grain yield is suitable for cultivation in the southern part of the country. BRRI dhan44 can also be cultivated in the high land for the popularity of its bold grain type.
