Genetic Analysis of Seed Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Dry Bean (physiolus Vulgaris L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The genetic component of variation and genetic parameters through Vr-Wr analysis relating to graphical presentation were done for days to maturity, plant height, pod length, seeds per plant, 20-seed weight and seed yield per plant in dry bean (Physiolus vulgaris L.). Complete dominance was observed for 20-seed weight, partial dominance for plant height and seed yield per plant, whilst over dominance for days to maturity, pod length and seed per plant. Positive and negative alleles were in unequel proportion among the parents for all the characters studied. Unequel distribution of dominant and recessive genes was also observed in the parents for those characters. Seed yield/plant, pod length, plant height and days to maturity are moderate to highly heritable where as seeds per plant and 20-seed weight are poorly heritable in narrow sense.

Objectives:

To identify the nature and magnitude of genetic components of variation and genetic parameters through Vr-Wr analysis for seed yield and yield contributing characters in dry bean.

Methodology:

Seven genotypes of dry bean viz. PB82, PB125, PB135, PB146, PB152, PB154, PB155 and their 21 F₁ families derived from diallel cross (without reciprocal)were included in the experiment. These plant materials, along with others are being maintained at the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experiment was set up in a Randomized Complete Block (RCB) Design with two replications during rabi season of 1999-2000. Four meter long single row plots were used for each replication. Row to row spacing maintained at a distance of 30 cm apart with 10 cm inter spacing. Data were recorded on an individual plant basis from 10 randomly selected plants per genotype in a replicate to record observations for days to maturity, plant height, pod length, seeds per plant, 20-seed weight and seed yield per plant (g). Genetic Components of variation and genetic parameters were estimated through numerical and Vr.Wr. regression graphs following Hayman (1954a, 1954b), Jinks (1954), Mather & Jinks (1971) and Singh and Chaudhury (1995).

The study may provide useful information of plant breeding importance about the nature and magnitude of genetic components of variation and genetic parameters through Vr-Wr analysis for seed yield and yield contributing characters in dry bean.
