Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Location to location variation in grain yield of the tested genotypes was significant. However, the tested genotypes and standard check produced higher yield than the local check. Among the tested entries, OM1490 matured in the shortest period of time (101 days) whereas other two entries matured in 106 days. That means, OM1490 is 5 days earlier with a slightly higher yield than the other two advanced lines. OM1490 is also 4 days earlier than the standard check variety BRRI dhan43. Although the local varieties in different locations matured in 99 days, on an average, the yield of those varieties was very low (1.8 t/ha). Except OM1490, mean plant height of other advanced lines was very similar (105 cm) whereas it was 88 cm for OM1490. The average plant height of local varieties was about 123 cm which was very favorable for lodging. Mean filled grains/panicle was also very similar among the advanced lines including standard check. The tested entries including check varieties were more or less affected by stem borer (5%) and leaf roller (3%). Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB), Bacterial leaf streak (BLS), Brown spot (BS) and Tungro were found at different score (10-15%) in different entries. In Gazipur (Kapasia), OM1490 was affected (15%) by Sheath blight. Except BR7385-2B-13, the tested entries including standard check BRRI dhan43 were lodging tolerant. The local checks were totally (100%) lodged.

Objectives:

To test the yield potential and adaptability of advanced lines at farmers’ field under different agro- ecological conditions of the country and to generate the feedback about the advantages and disadvantages of the lines from extension workers and farmers.

Methodology:

Three advanced lines: OM1490, BR7383-2B-23, BR7385-2B-13 along with a standard check BRRI dhan43 and a local check were tested at BRRI farm, Gazipur, Gazipur (Kapasia), Zhinaidah (Sadar), Faridpur (Sadar) and Kushtia (Sadar) during B. Aus, 2011. But unfortunately, the trials at Zhinaidah and Faridpur were damaged due to some local unfavorable situation. The trials were replicated thrice in each location. The unit plot size for each entry was 16.2 m² (5.4m x 3m). Seeding time at different locations was within last week of April, 2011 and line seeding was done with 25 cm row spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 60: 40: 40: 10: 3 kg/ha N: P₂O₅: K₂O: S: Zn. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal and urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 15, 25 and 35 days after seeding. Other standard management practices were followed as and when necessary. Appropriate measures were taken to control insect pests. Date of seeding, transplanting, flowering, maturity, plant height, lodging tolerance, pest and disease incidence, yield and yield components were recorded. Feedback from farmers and DAE personnel were also recorded. For yield estimation, 10 m² sample areas from each plot was harvested at maturity and grain yields were adjusted to 14% moisture content.

Achievement/Findings:

Farmers showed their interest about the tested entry OM1490 for its better yield and shorter growth duration which will help the farmers to cultivate Aman rice in time. Based on the shorter growth duration (101 days) and a reasonable yield, OM1490 may be considered for Proposed Variety Trial (PVT) for Broadcast Aus season.
