An old mulberry (BM-4) orchard of Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute premises was modified to create sufficient interspaces for crop cultivation. One row from every two alternate rows was uprooted to create interspaces for crop cultivation where rice, wheat, garlic, mustard, chickpea and mungbean were grown following the cropping pattern Rice (wet season) – winter crops - Mungbean during 2004-2005. Objectives of this project were to investigate the opportunity of intercropping in mulberry interspaces, appropriate crop selection, and impact on mulberry leaf yield. Winter rice cultivation in mulberry interspaces was not promising.  However, the performance rainfed rice cultivation in wet season was excellent. All three rice varieties/lines IR71700-247-1-1-2,  WAITA-4 and BRRI dhan39 performed equally good and produced yield 4.84, 4.7 and 4.6 t/ha respectively. Out standing performance of Wheat and Garlic was observed under irrigated situation. Mean wheat yield was 4.14 t/ha while garlic yield was 6.1 t/ha. Mustard cultivation under rainfed condition was also promising. Mean yield was about 1.2 t/ha. Chickpea could not perform well. Grain and biomass yield of mungbean were 0.9 and 2.65 t/ha respectively. The most exciting information from this investigation was leaf yield of mulberry was almost similar in modified planting space where 33.33 % mulberry plant uprooted compared to undisturbed plots. In addition, successful crop cultivation had created a unique opportunity for mulberry farmers to increase income and family food security.

  • To investigate the possibility of rice, wheat, mungbean, garlic, chickpea cultivation as intercrop in mulberry field.
  • To select appropriate crop and crop variety as inter crop in mulberry field.
  • To increase the productivity of mulberry field hence minimizes the cost of mulberry production.
  • To improve the socio economic condition of mulberry farmers

Modification of mulberry orchard: An old mulberry orchard of variety BM-4 planted in 1.0 m x 1.0 m (plant to plant and row to row) spacing was modified. One row from every two alternate rows was uprooted to create inter spaces for crop cultivation i. e. 33% mulberry plant was cut down.  Cultivable space was 1.6 m width x 27 m length per strip and there were 24 strips and 9 rows were undisturbed. Crop cultivation: Rice was grown in boro 2004 and aman 2005 season, three varieties of boro rice viz. BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan36 were grown under irrigated condition while in transplanted aman season BRRI dhan39, WIATA4 and IR71700-247-1-1-2 were grown rainfed condition. In 2005 winter season, wheat (cv. Shatabdi) and garlic (cv local) was grown under irrigated condition while chickpea (cv. BARIchola-5) and mustard (cv BARIsarisha-6) was grown under rainfed situation. BINAmung-5 was grown in all plots in Kharif II. Fertilizer and other management practices were followed as per recommendation for the specific crops grown. Mulberry leaf harvest: Season 1: (for chaita crop: 25th Dec.-5th Jan) , Season 2: (for jaistha crop: 25th March-5th April), Season 3: (for Bhaduri crop: 1st June-20th June) and Season 4: (for Agrahani crop: 1st Sep.-10th Sep).

Inter crop (Rice in wet season, wheat, garlic, mustard, chickpea in dry season and mungbean in summer) cultivation in mulberry interspaces was promising. The most exciting information from this investigation leaf yield of mulberry was almost similar in modified planting space where 33.33 % mulberry plant uprooted compared to undisturbed plots. In addition, successful crop cultivation had created a unique opportunity for mulberry farmers to increase income and family food security.
