Effect of Potash on Sheath Blight Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Incidence and severity of sheath blight (ShB) disease were significantly affected by the treatments at p = 0.05. The highest ShB disease severity (53.9%) was recorded in T₂ where potash fertilizer (MP) was missing. Application of K either basal or top dress reduced the disease severity significantly over T₂. Additional application of 40 kg MP/ha (T₄) at the reproductive stage showed considerable disease suppression and yield increase over the BRRI recommended practice, basal application (T₁). Similarly, when K applied as top dress with urea in 3 equal splits instead of basal application, similar level of disease protection and yield advantage was obtained (T₃). The highest grain yield was recorded in T₉ (Healthy control) (4.8 t/ha) followed by the treatments where fungicidal control measures were taken T₈ (4.6 t/ha) and T₇ (4.5 t/ha) in fact, there were no statistically significant variation among them. In contrast, the lowest grain yield was recorded in T₂. Application of MP fertilizer although demonstrated considerable disease suppressive ness but not up to the desired level as the disease severity appeared far higher than T₇ and T₈ where chemical control measure was applied.

Objectives:

To validate and understand the application of potash (K) fertilizer on sheath blight disease management and confirmation of the previous result.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted in aman seasons at the BRRI Rajshahi in order to understand the application of K-fertilizer on sheath blight disease management and confirmation of the previous result. There were nine treatments as follows: T1 = BRRI recommended practice (all MP applied as basal), T2 = -MP (K missing), T3 = MP applied in 3-equal splits with urea, T4 = Additional MP 40 kg/ha at 4 DAI and 14 DAI, T5 = MP spray @ 0.5 g/l at 4 DAI and 14 DAI, T6 = All MP applied at MT stage, T7 = T1 +Hexaconazole at 25 g ai/ha at 4 & 14 DAI) (control -2), T8 = T1 + Pencycuron 140 g ai/ha at 4 & 14 DAI) (control -1), T9 = As per T1 (Healthy control). RCB design was followed with three replications. Unit plot size was 4 m x 3 m. Fertilizers such as Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied at the rate of 180:100: 70: 60 kg/ha. TSP and Gypsum were applied during final land preparation however urea was top dressed in 3-equal splits as per recommendation while MP fertilizer were applied as per treatments. The cultivar was BR11. Thirty day old seedlings were transplanted (2-3 seedlings/hill) at a spacing 20 x 20 cm². Nine hills in each plot were selected in such a way that would spread over the plot keeping uniform distance to each other. The selected hills were marked with bamboo stick. Artificial inoculation was made at the maximum tillering stage. Rizoctonia solani cultured on PDA were used directly for inoculation. Only the marked hills were inoculated. Initial soil analysis was carried out in collaboration with SRDI laboratory at Rajshahi (pH 7.3, organic matter 1.43 %, total nitrogen 0.11%, phosphorus 12.28, potassium 0.09 meq/100 g soil, sulfur 9.70 µg/g soil). Disease data such as horizontal (incidence) and vertical spread (RLH) were taken at maturity stage from 9 spots of each plot (45 hills- in each spot inoculated hill and its 4 alongside hills were included) and summarized by Severity Index (SI) = (31.2 X-62.4) * A/100. Yield and yield components were taken after harvest.

This investigation indicated that successful control of Rice Sheath blight disease would require application of potash (K) fertilizer along with other control measures like chemical control.
